True all good points and the features added in the 3gs are great don't get me wrong. But I'm use to apple being light years ahead of everything else

In my opinion, they still are in many respects. Sure, there are phones out there with higher MP cameras and perhaps a few other tricks that the iPhone doesn't do, but no one has near the complete package like the 3GS.

Again, Apple doesn't need to kill itself bringing a higher-tech device to stay ahead in this game, I don't think. They're already there, they just need to maintain. They brought smart, reasonable upgrades to the platform to keep it competitive for the next year or so and that's all they need to do well. I think they found a nice balance.

And the camera is nothing without great software which the iphone has.

They have sold what over 40 million iphone and ipod touches worldwide, so they are doing something right. Why make unnecessary changes when you don't have to make them. Apple likes to test most features so they are done right when they release them, and they are doing fine at the rate of upgrades right now. They just added many features people have been asking for and maybe the features you want will be there next year.

It looks like a lot of people let down by the supposedly not so stellar hardware upgrade are forgetting a very big reason why the iPhone is so good. The apps. With the upgrades they made to the 3GS, there are going to be a whole new level of apps coming down the pipe. For example, now that we have video, it's going to be possible for devs to create apps that will have the ability of iMovie editing quality home videos right on the iPhone 3GS. Or a whole new line of Navigational apps now that the new 3GS has compass ability. I can't wait to see what the devs are going to give us.

Not only the whole new world of aps for the 3GS, but there are over 1000 API's for all iphones. The only features the V1 and 3G won't get will have to do with the 3GS specific changes.

I wait with interest to read about build-quality of the S. I hope for Apple's sake they really did fix the problem many 3G owners had with cracks in the plastic housing. I think I read that Apple supposedly fixed that issue, but I there are posts on MacRumors to this day reporting cracking of the 3G housing. One of the things making me not want to upgrade yet from my Edge version is not wanting to deal with inferior build quality/cracking, especially since I live more than 2 hours away from the nearest Apple Store (for now at least)

The good news is that Apple will cover the phone if the cracks do appear. I haven't seen nearly as many posts lately on the cracking issue, perhaps Apple quietly solved the issue?

Was the 3G 2x faster than the v1? If so, I am looking at a 4x upgrade when I move up to the 3GS

I think the OP has a good point with existing 3g owners. Most of the upgrades you will get just from upgrading the OS. However for new users (like myself), this is really good news. Higher capacity, better battery life, etc. have now pushed me to buy the new 3GS. I already liked the iPhone 3G but was waiting until they increased storage and battery capacity. Looks like they did and now I'm switching over and buying.
