1GB is still pretty large....from what I have seen with my videos and iphone most movies can be converted to iphone - friendly and be under 700mb and will look pretty much identical to the dvd when you play on iphone.

Yea, i could have lowered the video bitrate setting from 1200s to something I guess in the 900s.

The other program videora screwed up my iTunes library when it was trying to add the file at the end unsuccessfully and that's why I went with Super. I'm running Vista 32 bit so maybe that's why.

Is 25 FPS or 30 FPS better? I just set the bitrate to 768 and 30 FPS to see the difference in file size and video quality.

Well the file came out to 650 MB , so I saved 350MB.

It seems to also look smoother, but it could be my imagination.

I set it to 768kbs bitrate for video and 30fps.

So all you need is DVD Dycrypter and Super Converter and your straight.

Handbrake seems pretty straight forward.

Install is easy, just keep clicking next.
To Rip a DVD, just place it in the tray, select the drive in Handbrake.
Select a Ipod preset like 2.35 for 2.35:1 widescreen and it will change the audio and video bitrate and resolution for you.
Choose your destination and type a file name.
Then hit encode.

I would help you more, but it didn't run on Vista for me.

I tried the pc version on XP pro and found that a lot of the DVDs I own have copy protection that is too strong for Handbrake and fails with message: "error no titles found." (and yes I selected the video_ts folder)

Its a shame because it sounded like a much better solution than my current two step decrypt/encode method.

Try putting DVD43 into Google and hit "I'm Feeling Lucky"

(I hope this isn't against forum rules)


P.S. DVD43 works great in Vista, even though it says it's for Win2K and WinXP only

Thanks for the tutorial Chris!

Because I'm using the Windows version of Handbrake (on Vista), even with your tutorial I was having a REAL hard time getting Handbrake to work - so much so that I gave up and started looking for other solutions. I tried a bunch of them and was semi-happy with Nero Recode, but I didn't want to shell out the cash for it - especially since I was only semi-happy with it. So I returned to Handbrake (hard to beat free) and kept experimenting. Finally, through LOTS of trial and error, I learned a few secrets to Handbrake and now I LOVE it! It's worked like a charm for every DVD I've converted. So I humbly submit a few of the things I learned along the way - to hopefully save the next guy a little anguish:

1. You must select the VIDEO_TS folder as the source, not just the DVD drive.
2. Don't select "automatic" under DVD Title - Select the main movie (which should be title 1, or the longest title).
3. Set the Width to 480, but leave the Height BLANK! If you selected a DVD Title, Handbrake will automatically detect the aspect ratio and entering a Height is completely unnecessary.
4. Set Cropping to Auto Crop - Handbrake does a great job of cutting off the black bars on the top and bottom (and some from the sides when necessary).

The main thing I was doing wrong was leaving the DVD Title set to Automatic and entering both a Width and a Height. No matter what I put in, I got a distorted picture (wrong aspect ratio) - IF I got anything at all. Once I learned to select the proper title (so Handbrake knows what aspect ratio to use) and leave the Height blank, Handbrake has worked great!

The only version of handbrake that I could find for Windows does not give me the ability to change some of these options that you mention like cropping and size. Could someone please post the link for the proper Windows version? Thanks
