Ive downloaded Handbrake. Followed the instructions . even used default settings and when i move the movie to iTunes and tells me it wont sync because its not a movie the iPhone can play.

What am i doing wrong?

Ok, this is going SLOW!!!! I tried to convert Back to the Future and first I get a message saying that the movie is encrypted and I needed ad VLC player to decode the movie. So I downloaded that and it had to scan the whole disk which took an hour and now it's encoding which is almost 2 hours in total encode time.

What's the deal? Is it because this is a protected disk? And I still don't know if this will even work! I apologize for any spelling errors as I'm on my iPhone since the program is taking up 100% of my resources on my new MacBook 2.4ghz with 4 gig of ram....

Wow, hour and a half later and its still got 3 hours and 42 minutes left on the part 2 of 2 encoding. Either I'm doing something wrong or I don't know...

Ok, the walk through says to keep the default settings, but the walk trough was also written almost 2 years ago and the default settings on the newer version on HandBrake are different.

(all my changes refer to the screen shot on page one)
I first turned OFF, 2 pass encoding.
next, I change the codec to MPEG 4 (ffmpeg)
then, I knocked the "constant quality" down to 50.
now, the average bitrate to 1000
I also went into preferences and turned on the "itunes friendly" file extension (m4v)

with all this, my encoding time estimate was at 35 minutes and is counting down at a proper minute to minute rate. I'll edit this again to let y'all know if it worked.

Final edit:

I give up. I tried different encodings, different settings, including screen resolution and still the "this video was not transfered because it cannot play on your iPhone". They all played in iTunes, but would not go onto the phone. Unless someone can give me their EXACT specs for movies that actually work, I'm not going to bother any more.

I lied, more edit:

Ok, the handbrake forums said to use the "Apple Universal" presets to get the video on the phone, but you have to "upgrade presets" in the program as they are not pre-upgraded in the 0.9.3 software. I am going to give this the college try after I get home and wake up today. I sure hope this will finally work....

It worked! What you have to do is after you install the newest handbrake, you have to "update presets" and then on the right side menu, you have to select "universal" under the Apple heading. It took about 2 and a half hours to encode Back to the Future, but it went into iTunes and is loading on my phone now.

So, I hope this helps out anyone having an issue.

HandBrake is a GPL'd multi-platform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter - it's super easy to rip the DVDs you have and put them on the new iPhone - they look great and are about 1 GB each, here's how... Install it, run it. Pop the DVD in. Pick the DVD volume. Choose your settings, I use the defaults usually.

Drag the MP4 file it makes in to iTunes, in videos tab in iTunes for the iPhone select the movie, click Sync.

The video is in the videos section. iPod / Videos.

Did you move the Handbrake application you downloaded to your Applications folder? What happens when you try to open it? Do you see any error messages or anything else?

I did what you said and moveded the handbrake to my application and still no it wont open. what is wrong

New 3Gs (had original) now have enough space to download movies. So, downloaded Handbrake, inserted a full length movie and followed the steps. All done successfully to iTunes as MP4 file. It views fantastic on the iMac. Went to sync it to the new 3Gs and I get the error message that the file extension is not supported. I previously loaded some small videos (shot on iPhone or from youtube) and the same with them. What I've had to do is convert the MP4's to .MOV and they'll work (sync). Not that bad for small stuff, but a lot of extra time for a 2 hour movie.

Doesn't iPhone accept MP4 file format? All I read says so. Am I missing something?
