Default Mac The Ripper

If you are on a Mac you want to try Mac The Ripper, the free version (2.6 I think) rips the DVD and saves the VIDEO_TS folder so that you can use Disk Utility to burn a DVD.

Handbrake is for converting DVD (MPEG-2) into MPEG-4 (mp4 or m4v)

In answer to a previous question, some DVDs will only encode for a few seconds and then appear to be finished. This is a known issue with some DVDs called the Zero Cell Issue. You can read about it here

hope this helps

Default can't transfer MPEG4

I used Pocket DVD Wizard to convert a music video to MPEG 4, but I can't get it into Itunes. I've tried to drag it and i've tried to import it, but to no avail.
Any help or suggestions?

Just got the Mac so I'm unsure of how to convert avi files to mp4 for the iPhone and iPod. I can use Handbrake to get a DVD to convert, but when I select the avi file as the Source, it just says that no valid source is found. Should I try using other software?

Try MPEG-Streamclip. It's very powerful for a free program. Alternatives include Visual Hub and Quick Time Pro.

This is great info! Thank you everyone. Quick question though, I am running a Powerbook 1.5 G4 and don't want to fry it. Would ripping a movie like Superman Returns be an all day type thing? Maybe I should stick with 30min TV shows? Thanks.

Handbrake did not seem to work for me last night. I downloaded it, put in my "Boiler Room" DVD..Handbrake converted it..I dragged it into iTunes with no problem.

However, when I tried to put it onto my 3G it said it could not sync to my iPhone? I downloaded the newest version of Handbrake for Leapoard and did not switch the column to iPhone/iPod on the right hand side..maybe that's the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
