On the version of Handbrake software that I use on my G5 iMac, it allows me to select presets for whatever media player. It has the iphone, psp, ipod video, appletv, etc.

It changes around the various file settings depending on which one you click.
However, I have not been able to rip a DVD in under 12 hours. I choose the iPhone setting everytime and it seems to work really well so far. The file sizes are all about 1GB. Is there another 'preset' setting that will play on the iPhone without losing quality or space and that WON'T take a full day to rip??

This sounds exactly like what happened with me on vista, and tried on xp, with a program called iriverter, does the same thing as this freeware. I solved the problem by actually making an exact directory for output, or destination(whatever you wanna call it)

To do this. Go to computer or my computer.
Go under your log in name
Right click, go to new, pick folder.
Name the folder, movie directory or w/e you want.
Pick this as your directory in the program

Hopefully this will work...good luck

Also for all the ones complaining about its taking to long. Usually for converters on a low processor or low memory:

1. Let the program run by itself, dont do it in backround. Its obvious if you're browsing the wbe or w/e it will take up RAM.

2. You can get a new dvd reader, hard disk...its not always your processor or memory. They do take a role in ripping but no...its a matter of how fast your disc reader can read the disc...

I have Windows XP and Vista and I use "Cucusoft DVD to IPhone converter" or "DVD Fab", real easy to use.

ok, sorry for the noob question in advance. I just bought my first mac pc. do you have to use a dvd ripper first before you use handbrake? or do you just run handbrake and then install the dvd. the reason i ask is i opened handbrake then put supertroopers dvd in and could not figure it out. i never found the select volume screen to start out. thanks for any help

Handbrake does the whole thing - rips and encodes

It has a habit of playing you DVD as well, which is annoying when you're trying to set up the software!

Yep, I just ripped Elf with Will Ferrel. It ripped fine, and downloaded as MPEPG 4 onto my desktop.

I dropped it into iTunes and let it import. But then when I synced my phone it told that "This movie cannot be played on this iPhone."

Very frustrating.

This was not mentioned in the tutorial, however I think its a crucial step:

Click the Presets toggle button in the top right corner of the application window and select - Ipod - Hi Rez

I've been using that setting for a month now and I'm getting files that are comparable to the ones you buy on iTunes. Now I have noticed you can right click them in iTunes and select "encode for ipod" or whatever, but thats only because its an mp4 and not m4v. In any case it syncs without any problems.

Wow, thanks for the info! Handbrake is great. Put it on my iPhone and wound up giving my wife her iPhone early, no way she would have waited for Christmas! As soon as she saw me putting a movie in all she wanted to do was go get one.

One question, is there a way on Handbrake to copy/burn a DVD that can be played on a regular DVD player? Looked but coulbn't figure it out.

Thanks to the OP and all else that chimed in!
