Default Hot Macbook

is it normal for the bottom of my MacBook to get much hotter while ripping dvd's than at other times?

Yes it's working much harder with all the rotations per minute of the disk spinning...Mark

Constantly having to be tethered to a charger is NOT MOBILE in my opinion (I.e., iPhone 3GS battery).

That is also a very processor-intensive task. The other thing to keep in mind is that the aluminum casing acts as a heat-sink to dissipate the internal heat.
