EDIT: Here is a great write up from gizmodo about the current precoess for ripping BluRay discs.

So i'm feeling my way through ripping my first blu-ray, which is proving to be quite tricky. I ordered this drive from Newegg, and it does the trick (it is relatively cheap because it does not burn BDs... only reads, which is fine for my purposes).

Turns out, there is no bluray decryption application for mac as far as i can tell, so i'm trying out the trial of AnyDVD HD to decrypt while Handbrake does the encoding.

Getting the video has worked fine the first couple of tries, but ausio has gotten messed up both times. First, i got the commentary track, which sounded fine, but was not what i wanted, and the second was just a bunch of pops and clicks...

So it's still a work in progress, but i hope once i get though this trial-and-error phase, i'll find a recipe that will get the job done.

anyone else give it a shot yet?

I'd be interested to hear how you make out. I have a fair amount of BluRay discs and would probably have a need to covert them for use on the iPhone.

looks like third time's a charm. I successfully converted National Treasure Blu-Ray to .m4v using the Apple "Universal" preset in Handbrake. I just needed to pick the right audio track. AnyDVD HD WAS necessary to decrypt, and it is not cheap. It does have a 21-day trial, though, so i intend to make full use of it.

Next is Season 1 of Heroes...

ok, i lied... i just did Mission Impossible III, and that went pretty well too. On the first try. NOW for Heroes...

So it appears this process is much more tricky/ buggy than my first two attempts would indicate. Actually, the national treasure rip only did half of the movie, and I didn't realize it unil later. And I can't get Heroes (season 1) or Signs to complete at all.

So Mission Impossible may be the exception raher than the rule.

Yeah i hear ya. Well a little update on the idvd thing.

Its not uncommon for iDVD to take 4hours to burn a movie. Some people have even posted on other forums with 11hour burn times. I called applecare and was told its idvd because idvd has to encode the movie, then re encode it again based on the specification you chose in project info (best enhancements/high quality/professional quality). Theres been posts on macrumours about people making 10min iSight movies with like 50pictures and it took 7hours for iDVD to encode and burn it.

For being such a "multimedia" computer it sure as hell should never take more than 30min tops to burn a DVD.

what experience are you basing this "30 minutes" on?

7-11 hours does seem pretty long, but encoding video is a complicated process.
