Best software for converting movies?

Hi all,

I wonder whether anyone could suggest some good free software for me. I have tons of films and tv shows on my pc, in AVI format, but want to watch them on my new iphone so need to do some converting. Google yields loads - but it's hard to know which is best!

I use iSquint. Its free. Works great for me.

A lot of people use Videora.

Thanks. I just had a quick glance but it only seems available for MAC users. Doh.

Videora should work for PCs.

Videora works well. That said, it is adware (if that's the right term for free software supported by in-GUI advertising) which can be a bit lurid at times. I have noticed that the end product mp4 files come in at about twice the size of the input .avi files, that may be true of all avi-to-mp4 conversion.

what's the difference between isquint and visualhub? are they better than Handbrake?
