Default Best software for converting movies?

Hi all,

I wonder whether anyone could suggest some good free software for me. I have tons of films and tv shows on my pc, in AVI format, but want to watch them on my new iphone so need to do some converting. Google yields loads - but it's hard to know which is best!

Cheers

Shady

I have noticed that the end product mp4 files come in at about twice the size of the input .avi files, that may be true of all avi-to-mp4 conversion.
