Your free options are limited. Have you tried importing your video file into iTunes and converting there for the iPhone?
Another package I've used is MPEG Streamclip (
www.squared5.com).
By far, the best converter between files types is Visual Hub. Not free, like you prefer, but very well regarded.
Finally, here is a link to some additional options:
http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=180154
That thread identifies the following:
Mac iPod video conversion programs with support for 640x480 MPEG-4 AVC h.264 baseline low complexity format
-
Handbrake/Mediafork (free), open source, multi-platform, complete DVD-to-MP4 solution, costs nothing, can be configured to encode 640x480 MPEG-4 and MPEG-4 AVC h.264 baseline low complexity, still under development as the Mediafork project is incorporated into a new version of Handbrake expected April 2007
-
ffmpegx (free), slim,
good tutorials, free, but no previews or advanced options
-
iSquint (free, bsed on ffmpegx), easy, free, but no advanced options
-
Visual Hub (shareware, from makers of iSquint), fast, good options, but (only!) US$23
- iTunes 'convert for iPod' (free), one-click, free, but slow, no options, can't handle raw DVD rips (VOB) and can result in loss of audio
- QuickTime Pro (premium), clean, professional, but slower, expensive, can't take VOB and can result in loss of audio
Good luck.
