The problem with these shows is, they don't get ratings for showing people with talent. Rather, they try to book the worst singers they can, with a sparse few with talent per town/city so they can actually progress through the riff raff later. The shows are as marketing-centric as you could imagine, if you fit the image they want to push for the season, you'll be given a lot of breathing room to progress.
I've had friends who have also done professional work in movie sound tracks and have done backup for bands like Evanescence (whoever they are), so I know they have talent. Oddly enough, however, they're denied a pass on every "sing show" they've tried out for. One of the women actually drove from LA to SF for a second shot, only to have the producers tell her bluntly why she couldn't be on the show, "honestly, you've got talent and we're not here for that."
Best of luck, maybe the Nashville show is a little more honest in that respect, they definitely take care of their own much better than hollywood does.
