My idea is a video INPUT cable for the iphone. My brother can design the app to use the interface with, but he cannot creat the hardware, someone needs to be familiar with the apple protocols or whatever they use for communications with accessories. I came across this need installing security cameras, alot of test monitors used for focusing are cumbersome and any small units are very pricey. This would be extremely useful since my phone is ALWAYS in my pocket, and a simple cable would be easy to have in a tool belt (nice for ladder work).

What do you think?

Thanks,
Nick

Thats a very good idea. As far i understood you want to have a video input to iphone so that u can record or watch security cameras or tapes.
I think the better way to do this is using WiFi.
Now a days there are many network security cameras. You can just access that network through iphone and watch the video stream. Or your brother can create some nice application that uses explores the iphone network capabilities. This way it will be wireless and you can access from anywhere around the world where there is internet available.
I hope i am on right path to your idea.

Let me know what you think...

Tarang,
Recording capability could also be useful for my idea, but what i want is not to monitor a video security system at all. I (and im sure many others could find a use for this) need a simple adapter to plug into the iphone dock port and have a male BNC (or other suitable connector) connector on the other end of the cable, to plug directly into the camera to aim/focus/zoom during installation. Usually a small monitor is used, but i think it would be awesome to use the iphone which has a much higher quality screen, is always charged and ready, and ALWAYS with me. My brother said the app end of this is simple, and thinks the cable is possible too, but needs a circuit designed to integrate into the phone's accessory language. Does this sound possible to you?

Oh ok i got your point now. I think its doable too. Have to look into it. Thought i am a hardware engineer i work as an application developer. But will look into the iphone hardware design and communication protocol and will let you know about the possible circuitry.

On second thought i guess WiFi can still be used to that purpose. If the receiver for the camera is a WiFi enables unit then search on iphone for other devices it might detect that receiver. Also if no Wifi is there and there is a LAN option then u can connect it through wireless router. I think this will still need a monitor or TV i am not sure. I think latest and advanced security receiver might be able to do this.

Anyways will find out the hardware details....
