Unfortunately, as revolutionary as the iPhone is, it's got more than a few shortcomings. AD2P is just one in a long laundry list of "standard apps" that the iPhone is missing.
Copy/paste
MMS
Flash
business card/file transfer
record video
customization of themes
games
voice recorder
Just to name a few....
Nearly all of these were resolved with jailbreaking and 3rd party apps, but that's not standard software.
Until the 2.0 firmware and the iPhone 2 are released, we can only speculate as to what apple responded to as far as what we the owners have been screaming for. Things in the compeditors phones have that are taking up the potential buyers who will not compromise what they expect a phone to do.
At this point, I think it's fairly safe to say that Apple is going to start losing ground to other manufacturers who are rapidly learning from Apples mistakes.
Apple makes great products- no question. But Steve Jobs is very short-sighted if he thinks that people will simply accept the limitations that his company tries to impose on their users.
Look at the jailbreak community. They were so successful, Apple's only recourse was to legitimize and capitalize on 3rd party apps. If no one had even made the attempt to hack the iphone, do you think that an Installer would be part of the upcoming firmware? maybe in another year or two...
The only thing I can tell you is that Apple does what will gain them the most money. Otherwise, active Sync would not be a part of the new 2.0 firmware.
At this point, it's a waiting game with everyone holding their breath and crossing their fingers that Steve will announce that their dreams have come true.
Personally, unless I can hack the 2.0 software, I am not going to be in a huge hurry to update. I mean I don't have an Exchange server to sync with, so unless Google is on board, it doesn't help me in the least.
