Bluetooth and GPS - iPhone 3G

I have the Garmin GPS10, a protable bluetooth GPS unit. I have tried to get the phone to connect with it, hoping this would make the map function. Has anyone else tried a GPS. Maybe I just don't know how to use the mapping function, I am open to instructions. I live in NM and I don't seem to get any location functions here.

are you trying to get the iphone to use the gps signal in your garmin receiver to control the google maps application on your iphone? well, i hate to break it to you, but that is not possible. there is nothing in the iphone's current software that will allow it to recognize a gps device via bluetooth and use the gps signal to interface with google maps. no way around that, unless you happen to be a spectacular software hacker who can take the iphone's software and rewrite it to do this. you'd need to adjust the bluetooth interface to allow it to receive gps data, and re-write the google maps application to allow it to take gps data and utilize it. and i'm probably over-simplifying what would need to change since i'm not a software engineer myself.

i hope you didn't buy the iphone thinking this would work. if so, what led you to believe this? gps capability (stand-alone or through google maps) was one of the most common questions that came up since it was announced in january, and the answer was consistently no from apple and david pogue and other journalists who had access to the prototype iphone in january and before it was released in june...

I have a Garmin Nuvi 680. The only way the iPhone will use the GPS is that the GPS can be used as a handsfree option allowing you to make and take phone calls from the GPS. A call comes in and you get a screen that offers you the choice to ignore or answer the call. If you have the number in your contacts, it will also show you the name of who is calling. You can also call anyone in your contacts via the GPS as well as see missed and recieved calls.

There is no true GPS function on the iPhone.

Thanks for confirming my conclusion. I did not purchase the phone for that purpose as I am a pilot and have access many GPS devices. It is built in to my toughbook, but that GPS is good for driving only but not for aviation. I bought the GPS10 to take care of the limited capabilities of my portable. Since I always had my phone with me and it was bluetooth I just thought maybe. I will leave the hacking up to those that have the time, I will just get use to the phone with its current amazing abillities, and wait for the evolution. Thanks for the response.
