Yeah, DO NOT cancel your service first, you may loose your number. Just transfer it in iTunes, that will automatically cancel your previous service.

While Ive also heard it elsewhere on the form from someone who has proved to be quite accurate (att_employee), if you look at the BGR manual, page 16-17 says:

"Existing AT&T wireless customers upgrading to iPhone: No upgrade fees apply."

"Customers activating a new line of service: Agree to a $36 start of service activation fee ( $26 for Family Talk Add-a-line)"

BTW....
I went through this a few weeks ago, switching from Sprint to Cingular. BEWARE! Sprint has a problem with porting more than one number, eg., a family account with 2+ numbers. The entry is accepted, the process starts... and then Sprint auto-cancels it.
I waited hours for my new Cingular phone to work, and when it didn't, I called the porting people at Cingular, and then: 1) they told me this always happens with multi-number ports, b) they had to submit them individually, c) Oh Wait Sprint porting people are closed for the day, d) call back tomorrow to resubmit... e) we're trying again, please wait 6 hours...
And don't forget, each phone call is dial in, type in the numbers, wait, argue with the robot that you really need a representative, etc.

In the grand scheme of life: no big deal. Waiting for your iPhone to work and every minute hurts: painful.

This is confirmed. It's a regular AT&T sim card. popped one out of a demo iPhone today.

I don't know if it's been discussed, there are 39 pages to wade through of great info here, and I'm on Hawaii time, just enough time to get to bed, and get up to stand in line.. so here's my question:

I've got AT&T now as a provider, but I have two Razors.. I want to score an IPhone today, will I have to write a new contract that will include the single Razor phone (my wife will use it) on the plan along with the IPhone, while cutting off my Razor?

Sounds like it may get complicated, more than the ITunes activation is prepared for.

Then there's the fact that I have a California phone number and a Hawaiian address. When I got the Razors the first time, they generated another phone number for my wife, but since I wanted to retain my old Cali number I had to go to the AT&T store and have them set up the phone..

Will I have to do that AGAIN?

Thanks for all the incredible info!

The Phone doesn't Work without Voice and Data activation? That would not even make any sense that the phone would not be able to power on and be used for other functions. Where did you get this info. It needs to be challenged.
Ouch!!$500? No discount?

These data plans are major rip offs. What would the point of having Wifi if the phone has to be connected to a GSM Data signal all the time. I think that this is a cool phone, but I would love it if it flopped until ATT and the other phone companies make the data plans more reasonable.

That's the way I understand it. The phone will not work or be activated unless AT&T is satisfied you have a data plan.

And there are no discounts, corporate discounts, subsidies, etc.: 500/600 for everyone.

The plans are special iPhone voice/data plans. You don't buy a voice plan and add a data. You get the iPhone, you get an iPhone plan. That's it.

It's been said from the very beginning that there wouldn't be a discount, no matter what. Apple never discounts anything so the iPhone would be no exception.
