Fabricated?

Maybe you should call an AT&T store here in LA and ask them if an existing customer can buy an iPhone? Let's see how pissed you will get when they tell you no, you can't buy one from them.

Like I said, don't take my words out of context.

Existing customers CAN buy the iPhone. Just requires they update their contract 2 years, pay full price for the phone. Maybe the store you called simply won't have them in stock?? (Or the rep was trying to reduce the customer line on the 29th!)

Default just a theory

I think that the iphone is a very innovative product that will help at&t achieve a group mindset and maybe someday we will crown applet&t as king and we will join forces to fight Walmart, Bestbuy, and Radioshack in a battle of epic proportions and bring them to there knees. Then Jesus will come back and bring us and applet&t all home to the ipod in the sky. But that just my theory!

Well i just called AT&T and this is what i got from the customer service rep. He told me things have changed and since the Iphone is being sold at retail price with no discounts and if you are still under contract (or not eligible for an upgrade) you will still be allowed to buy the phone and start a new 2 year contract.

Don't worry about it. It's a non-issue. Everyone will be able to get an iphone as long as their account is in good standing and they can sign up for a two year extension.

This is another instance of RSCs not knowing what's going on. As a store manager, I didn't know until a few hours ago exactly what the eligibility requirements would be. RSCs have been answering questions based upon how they've dealt with other in-demand devices.

The ONLY eligibility requirements are these:
Customer must be over 18
Customer must have a credit or debit card
Customer must have an email address
Customer must have internet access
Customer may not activate device on CRU or NBI account

A customer can perform an upgrade tomorrow to another device and extend his or her contract, and STILL be eligible to purchase the iPhone and re-extend their contract on Friday.

A credit check will be run on new customers/new lines of service - in Apple stores, on itunes and at AT&T stores. If a deposit is required, the customer will have to pay the deposit in an AT&T store in order to complete activation - even if they purchased their device in an Apple store or on apple.com. If the customer does not want to pay the deposit, he/she may activate the device on a NEW GoPhone Pick Your Plan account, adding the iPhone data package.

A customer may not initiate activation of the device to an existing prepaid account, nor will the customer be able to activate the device as a GoPhone, without being denied post-paid activation without a deposit.

Only one device will be sold per customer. If you want to activate multiple on a family plan, then there must be one family member present per device sold.

As there will be an in-store direct fulfillment process available, and quantities delivered to stores may be somewhat limited, supplies will run out quickly, and customers will be shipped their iphone directly from the warehouse.

Hey dude! Welcome back

I just read your answer and it sorta gave me a glimmer of hope. However...

If the customer does not want to pay the deposit, he/she may activate the device on a NEW GoPhone Pick Your Plan account, adding the iPhone data package.

^---- You have me here

A customer may not initiate activation of the device to an existing prepaid account, nor will the customer be able to activate the device as a GoPhone, without being denied post-paid activation without a deposit.

^---But you lost me there

So the point is that I can get the phone as a GoPhone so long as I do...(?)

Sorry if I'm just being slow (had a long day at work and still have some left to do tonight! )

Q. Where can I buy iPhone?

A. iPhone is available at AT&T stores, Apple stores and online at apple.com. Find an AT&T store that sells iPhone now.
Q. How much does iPhone cost?
A. There are currently two versions of iPhone available. $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8 GB model. Both prices require a 2-year service agreement.
Q. Is iPhone eligible for Wireless Phone Insurance?
A. No. iPhone is ineligible for the Wireless Phone Insurance program offered to AT&T customers. iPhone is covered by the Apple Warranty. If you have Wireless Phone Insurance from AT&T, it will be removed from your line of service.
Q. Are business customers eligible for discounts?
A. No. iPhone service is available only to consumer accounts. iPhone and associated wireless service are not eligible for corporate discounts.
Activation

Q. How do I activate iPhone?
A. You activate iPhone in a whole new way—using iTunes right on your computer. All you need is a PC or Mac, a credit card or debit card, access to the Internet and an email address.
The credit approval for your AT&T service also happens on your computer. It’s part of activating through iTunes, but if you’d rather have your credit pre-approved before you leave the store, an AT&T store representative can help you with that.
You will also select an available plan during activation.
Q. Does iPhone work out of the box?
A. No. iPhone must be activated before it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.
Q. How long does it take to activate iPhone?
A. Most activations should happen within a few minutes of selecting your plan. If there are any questions around your account status or credit, there may be delays in activation.
Existing Customer Questions

Q. How do I upgrade to iPhone?
A. Just go to an AT&T retail store, and mention you're replacing your existing phone. Our salespeople will help you through the process and answer any questions you have.
Soon you'll be able to upgrade through myWireless online.
Q. Do I need to switch to a different rate plan if I upgrade to iPhone?
A. If you’re an existing AT&T (formerly Cingular) wireless customer, you just need to add an iPhone Data Plan. (This may replace your current data plan. Your voice plan will stay the same) The iPhone Data Plan gives you Visual Voicemail, as well as Unlimited Data—includes both email and web—and texting, all for as little as $20. You'll add an iPhone Data Plan during the activation process.
Q. Can I add iPhone to a FamilyTalk plan?
A. Yes. Just go to an AT&T retail store, and mention you'd like to add a line to an existing account.
Q. Do I need to switch to a different FamilyTalk rate plan if I want to add iPhone?
A. No. You might want to upgrade your minutes since you are adding an additional line.
Q. I just upgraded my phone recently. Are there any penalties or restrictions for upgrading to iPhone right away?
A. No. Everyone can upgrade to iPhone right away.
Q. What if I currently have a GoPhone?
A. You will need to activate iPhone on a new account with a new phone number.
Q. I'm an existing customer. Can I swap out my current SIM card and start right away?
A. No. iPhone must be activated befroe it can be used. iPhone includes a pre-installed SIM card for your convenience.
