Well i just got off the phone with a cingular/AT&T rep and they told me that 4 new data plans are supposed to be coming out on the 29th. I believe these data plans are going to be specifically for iphone customers, it makes sense to release new ones if you are releasing a product that requires a data plan.
Did they say how much it would cast? price-ranges?
What i don't seem to understand is that it's a Cingular exclusive, but you can purchase it from Apple.com w/o being a cingular customer...
You won't be able to use it as a phone until its sim card is activated on the Cingular/At&t network. Some thing apple will do it right in the store just like At&t will activate them in their stores, others think you will have to call At&t and activate it over the phone just like you do online phone purchases from At&t.
I know it sounds like a horrible plan - but remember WII? remember 360? remember FERBIES? This is the best thing they could possibly do for their product. Unfortunately, it's going to make a lot of people upset - but it's also going to make a lot of people REALLY REALLY REALLY "need" an iphone
I definately have to disagree. This is a VERY BAD thing that they are doing to their product, this combined with the fact that only some people can get it. If people are being turned away, that means that they are SELLING LESS. When you sell LESS, you can't make MORE! The Wii, 360, and Ferbies do not have neccessary things that cost extra money like this, and they were available to EVERYONE, not just some people. People don't go: "Wow! a $40/month Data plan on top! WOHOO! SIGN ME UP! I HAVE TOTALLY CHANGED MY MIND AND DECIDED TO GET ONE NOW THAT IT COSTS MORE! WOOT!" Doesn't happen. I think turning certain people away and making you pay $40/month on top, not even giving you the choice for what kind of data plan you want, is a BAD move. I may not be able to get one now. My Dad doesn't like internet on cell phones, even if it is unlimited. He isn't going to want me to pay $40/month on a phone when I have college and other expenses to look into. This isn't looking good for a lot of people. AT&T is gonna hurt Apple by this.
Since we don't know yet I'm just going to hang tight and wait to hear what the officially announced plans are.
Like other smartphones, the iPhone is not a cheap device. I personally don't know any college students, or younger, who have a smartphone. I'm sure they are out there, I just don't know any. All of the young adults in my family who are into the texting scene all use your standard phones, some with cameras, etc. Most of them who do a lot of texting actually pay a pretty good monthly bill to do so. The folks I know who use smartphones are almost all using it for their job and pay for the service. It seems the iPhone is priced appropriately and should have a data plan that goes with it to make the package complete. I don't think everyone will be able to afford it just like a lot of other products, like the PS3, PSP, Video iPod, etc. Those who can afford it and want its features will buy it.
Hi ATTingular
I'm sure you have been asked this before, but i can't find it, so hopefully as someone who's closest to an expert here you can answer my following question.
You mentioned almost everyone can use it, even non-cingular customers. I am not living in the US, but does that mean I can use the iPhone as long as my line has a data package, and as long as I pay ATT the termination fee? Will I be able to connect/update using iTunes then? Is it even possible?
Hopefully you or any other knowledged individual can clear my doubts

They said that they weren't releasing any prices right now, that was even for the iphone with an upgrade available however as ATTingular had mentioned i believe apple is being very firm on no discount from 499/599. So in answer no, prices are not final yet and she said either they will come out nearer to the date or on the release date.

Will you be able to use it as a phone? Yes. However, other things will be disabled, as they require the carrier to have an Apple server, similar to Blackberry's and the Danger Sidekick series. Basically, if you're not going to use AT&T, you'll have to wait until it's launched by your carrier, assuming you want everything to work right.

So far, that has been the consistent line. They may have discounts down the line, but the only people that know that are the top execs at Apple and AT&T.

Yes, I am an AT&T employee. I have seen an actual iPhone.
No, I cannot hook you up with an iPhone early or at discount. Sorry.

Wow this is very very exciting news for me, because even though I've been watching the iPhone closely, i'm in Singapore which unfortunately wouldnt be seeing one until 2008.
Does this mean that the iPhone will not be locked to AT&T/Cingular, cus I was always under the impression that it will be. I don't really need visual voicemail or other service related services, just GPRS/EDGE, which my provider already has.
