Default MMS pricing for 3G and 3GS

I guess AT&T will not charge for MMS if you have a text plan if I'm reading this correctly.

MMS coming at no extra charge to all txt plans for iPhone 3G S/3G later this summer.

I guess AT&T didn't want to anger anymore people. Really they shouldn't even be charging for texting if you have unlimited data it's all just data. Mark

I agree with you. It is just another means for AT&T to nickle and dime people.

SMS is not sent over the internet, if I remember correctly, but sent over the handshake your phone uses to keep itself connected to the tower. Either way, we get raped on messaging.

That would be quite nice if there is no extra charge.

Currently AT&T bills one MMS as 3 (three) text messages, but one of the reports I read (and cannot find again) said that for the iPhone it will be billed as 4 (four) texts.

If you're unlimited, they can bill it as 1000 texts and it won't matter. But I only get 200, so the difference between 3 and 4 can add up quick.

I have family unlimited so I will have mms unless they exclude the iphone from mms on that plan without extra cash. Shutter is right about sms messages using such a low frequency 'handshake' to the tower they wouldn't use it or need to upgrade it otherwise and is costs them next to nothing to maintain. Text messaging is where they get the largest part of their income, so I don't see a stop to the high prices anytime soon.

I think every phone plan should come with 200 for free which would attract many new customers who aren't heavy texters, and don't want to pay extra for it. Then move every other plan down into the other ones spot - 1500 for $5, unlimited(one line) for $15, and Family unlimited $20. Also by giving people 200 free you have a good chance of them getting to where they need more than 200 and they upgrade because they are hooked on it.

This is not true. If you have a 200 message plan, you can send and receive 200 messages (text or MMS) before they start charging you additional. If you do not have a plan, AT&T charges 30 cents per message + 1 cent per kilobyte of data transfered. As an iPhone owner with unlimited data you would only be charged 30 cents.
