How to make sure itunes has created a restore point

i want to install the new update, but i modded my phone so i want to make sure when i restore its from today. how do i make sure that today it restored, saved my contacts etc.

Sync it, then check your preferences under the iPhone tab.

Not sure about on a Mac, but in Windows, click Edit, then Preferences and when the Preferences window opens, click the iPhone tab at the top center. It should tell you when the last backup was made.
In a nutshell, it's automatic when you sync.

anyone else get an error when restoring, "iphone has timed out, cannot restore phone" but it does actually restore the iphone but no settings were kept...

I got the same message too. It sorts scared me, but everything was fine on the phone.

cool i made sure it was the latest update , it synced , restored , updated , resynced, remodded and now im happy.
