View Full Version : Astronomy via the iPhone
I have a small observatory in my backyard. It is setup for remote control via my LAN or from the outside via the Internet. Recently I was in Sunnyvale on business travel so I decided to see if I could access my observatory from 3000 miles away using the Safari browser in my iPhone and AT&T's Edge network..
The image in this URL (http://www.jatobservatory.org/Galleries/DeepSpaceObjects/slides/NGC7635.html) is the result of that attempt.
The iPhone was used as the interface to:
-Power-up the observatory, telescope mount and cameras.
-Configure, align and point the telescope.
-Focus the camera.
-Capture the 15 minute exposure of the Bubble Nebula (NGC7635)
-Process the image.
-Shut-down and secure the cameras, telescope and observatory.
While the image is far from perfect I think it's pretty good given the small size of the iPhone's display.

Lovely. Now I know I'm going to have to buy myself a telescope again. Your pics look great on the iPhone too.
All I can do remotely so far (camera-wise) is have my laptop take a picture of my son sitting at the computer, then take a snapshop of the screen and make sure he's not browsing some bad site (he never does, he's always playing World of Warcraft)
