View Full Version : iPhone Features Requests

Here are a few feature requests we would like to see added to the iPhone at some point:
* 3G. not that it is available in my area, but some day it will be!
* The iPod application includes a handy volume control slider, but does not appear to include a method for changing the playing location of the current audio track (rewind/fast-forward/jump to point). This feature does appear in the video player.
* GPS with integration into Google Maps
* Use the built in camera to record video.
* Push email from Google. Not totally in Apple's control because Google does not currently offer IMAP. When/if Google adds this feature it would be nice to know that the phone will support it.
* Steve pointed out that iPhone parses phone numbers in email messages, how about parsing street addresses with a magical import into Google Maps?
* Support for multiple email accounts. This feature may already be present, I can't tell from the demos. These days people have many email accounts including work and one or more Gmail, Yahoo!, and Hotmail accounts.
* Display Favicon.ico (the little icon/logo next to the site address in most browsers) image on the bookmarks screen and the change page screen.
* Flash videos supported: At present, iPhone seems only supports mp4, h.264, mp3, aac. If it supports Flash files, iPhone will be more popular. Flash is working its way into all of todays popular sites (YouTube, MySpace, Google Talk (web), Yahoo! Messenger (web), etc)
* Third-party software: The list of applications available for Windows Mobile and Palm is huge! I am sure many of the Mac developers out there would love the opportunity to develop/sell applications that run on the iPhone like games, video conversion, DVD to iPhone (http://www.dvdtoiphone.net/) software, music data recovery, media editor, etc.
* There has been some rumors of an Apple developed spreadsheet application for Mac. It would be nice if there was a mini-spreadsheet program for viewing/editing simple spreadsheets. The same thing goes for Word documents (as you might guess Microsoft makes mini-versions of these applications available on their phone OS).

Hi and welcome to EI .
Your post is very well thought out and I agree with with you that all the features you list would be great additions to the iPhone. Some of them may even be available from the beginning.
* The iPod application includes a handy volume control slider, but does not appear to include a method for changing the playing location of the current audio track (rewind/fast-forward/jump to point). This feature does appear in the video player.I noticed this too while watching the keynote. I listen to a lot of audio books and this feature is a must. I would be surprised if it is absent.
* Flash videos supported: At present, iPhone seems only supports mp4, h.264, mp3, aac. If it supports Flash files, iPhone will be more popular. Flash is working its way into all of todays popular sites (YouTube, MySpace, Google Talk (web), Yahoo! Messenger (web), etc)Flash may be present from the start. According to an interview with Steve Jobs (http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/01/13/ultimate-iphone-faqs-list-part-2/), youtube support will be at the very least. Here is the relevant part of the interview:
Markoff: “And what are you thinking about Flash and Java?”
Jobs: “Java’s not worth building in. Nobody uses Java anymore. It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain.”
Markoff: “Flash?”
Jobs: “Well, you might see that.”
Markoff: “What about YouTube–”
Jobs: “Yeah, YouTube—of course. But you don’t need to have Flash to show YouTube. All you need to do is deal with YouTube. And plus, we could get ‘em to up their video resolution at the same time, by using h.264 instead of the old codec.”
* Third-party software: The list of applications available for Windows Mobile and Palm is huge! I am sure many of the Mac developers out there would love the opportunity to develop/sell applications that run on the iPhone like games, video conversion, DVD to iPhone software, music data recovery, media editor, etc.In a recent interview, Steve said that they still haven't decided if they are going to allow 3rd party apps. IMHO, it is just a matter of time. If I had to bet, I would say they will wait awhile to allow 3rd party apps. This will give time for the iPhone to establish a reputation as a solid stable device. Then if stability problems occur after 3rd party apps are introduce, it will be obvious where the blame lies.

You brought up some excellent points and as always, wot was there with his extremely long, quote-filled posts to clear things up. You basically did an excellent job with your list and there is not much more I can say.
One thing I did notice, though, is the flash bit. I don't remember where, and I will try to find the source, but I do remember reading an update on this that mentioned for sure it will have Flash, but that the version is not yet known. I remember that it was linked on this forum, though, so if you look around, you might just find it.
For the iPod scroller thing, it is an interesting point and now that I think about it, this wasn't really displayed in the keynote. I can't see it not being in there, though, as everybody wants to rewind and fast forward. Come on, you can touch your music :D
Some of the things you mentioned are definitely possibilities, like the third party software. It has yet to be officially announced, and it is all speculation at this point.
Well, I am rambling now. Great job, and welcome to EI

Yeh there must be a way to do this.
Maybe if you hit the pause button, the volume slider could do double duty and change to a fast forward/rewind slider... or maybe the previous/next track ( |< >| ) buttons do double duty somehow?
On the Apple website and in Jobs' demo, when you're in cover flow mode there's an "i" button on the bottom right corner that's not accounted for... I'm not sure if that would bring you back to the "now playing" screen or what..
3G??? I don't even know why people want 3G...

1.3G a must
2.GPS a must w/ Google (i heard it will be included in 2.0)
3.At least a 5.0MP video recorder that record up to 30fps. In this day of age, it's important to have a video recorder now...look at what they capture on Saddam and the Virginia Tech. Apple need to take into consideration that this is a highly requested feature on a mobile phone. Don't just give us a cheap one either...come out w/ the BEST in the market.
4. Support all kinds of video formats...flash divx wmv...ect. I have another question...does the browser support these formats as well?? i don't think so. It'll be nice that you can download video and mp3 directly in the cellphone.
5.Does it support AIM, MSM messenger?? These are MUST HAVE as well!! If i can run browser on my cellphone, WHY can't i run AIM as well?? Afterall, i am using my Wifi internet...i just need the software...which are already FREE everywhere.

Yea but it's only 2.0MP which is weak and not clear. You got to come out w/ at least a 5.0MP video recorder like Nokia N95!!
There is WiFi already, put in HSDPA too, and everybody will be happy. I still don't want 3G.

I want a GPS very much as well. The sad part is by the time Apple comes out with it I'll probably have broken down and bought a great car model.
As a Mac user here's what I would want in my iphone GPS is the ability to plan a daily itinerary from my mac and have it synced automatically thru bluetooth.
So if on Tuesday I had to go to a meeting in Waltham, my aunt's house in Needham, the plumbing store in Newton and my italian class in Cambridge, I would simply enter those addresses in my mac and I'd go to the GPS and find them there.
The reason I want this is I type 80-100 words a minute on a keyboard so there's no way I want to spend any time putting addresses in a GPS.
I would assume (I hope correctly) that all the addresses from the Mac address book would be automatically synced to the phone and available thru the GPS.
Other useful features would be:
--The ability to easily answer the phone and return to the navigator by placing the call on hold. I currently am testing Verizon's VZ navigator on a motorola krazr, and I've found if I need to answer the phone or make a call, it exits the navigator and by the time I get back in I'm lost. Would be much better if I could place the call on hold for a moment with the navigator still running to find out where to turn next.
--Automatically inputting the state where you are as a first option when entering an address. The Verizon program keeps guessing Maine when I put in M. Then Maryland. Only after I type Mas through the cumbersome keyboard do I get Massachusetts!

At least a 5.0MP video recorder that record up to 30fps..
I'm sorry but you don't even know what you're talking about here... 5 MP is virtually impossible unless you increase the size of the lens, thus increasing the size of the phone. Video is hard enough to do for an image sensor... You can do 30 fps but you have to reduce resolution...
Camcorders aren't the size that they are for no reason...
volume control slider
There's a volume control on the side. You want a volume control on the screen? I think it has one of those when playing music from what I remember of the keynote.
multiple email accounts
I was under the impression this was already supported.

So in other word, future iphone will never have at least a 5.0MP cam recorder since obviously they would not expand the size.

I agree with having other apps available on the iPhone, I'm sure they will have it if there's demand. My mother is a realtor and didn't want the iPhone because her other phone allowed the program, AgentOffice to be used on there. After she saw the demo and is not liking our current service provider, we're switching and purchasing iPhones. I definitely think other apps provide incentive for non-Mac users to look into the iPhone.

I am hoping 2.0 means update and not 2nd generation??. I love gps capabilties and feel it is long over due in smart phones.2.0 means 2nd gen. Features like GPS and 3G require hardware in the phone that can not be added with an update. There is still hope for GPS in version 1, but it will require a separate bluetooth GPS receiver. Until the iPhone is opened to 3rd party apps (not web apps), GPS support is unlikely.

1. Finder integration (i want to browse the filesystem)
2. Have ability to receive data via Bluetooth, not just for headset
3. Video capture
4. Flash player and AIR (to support adobe's flex)
5. Ability to send multiple image attachments in an email
6. Custom ringtones
7. Native Games (just like the iPod games)
8. Ability to create and edit the Word and Excel documents. Or at least hook me up with a word processor.
9. Support for streaming mp3 content (online radio)

1. Ability to send a PIX message directly (not an email with picture attachment). Ability to receive PIX message as well (not just email with picture attachment).
2. Ability to check TXT or PIX message delivery status (whether the message was received successfully by the other end, or not...time sent/received, etc.)
3. Ability to be on phone call AND use internet features via EDGE simultaneously.
4. Ability to detect "open" WiFi hot spots and present only those to join. Also add 802.11N.
5. Two-way syncing of PHOTOS. New photos taken on iPhone would download to computer, just as selected photos from computer will transfer to iPhone.
6. Peer-to-peer networking (i.e. ability to transfer contact info/photos/other data between close-range iPhones via Bluetooth or IR.)
7. Streaming media (a la Apple TV model). Imagine previewing movie trailers while standing outside a movie theater trying to decide what to watch?
8. Blink (RFID) technology/digital wallet - ability to use phone similarly to "Blink" enabled credit cards for point-of-sale transactions.

So am I the only person who desperately wants this feature and feel as though the iPhone would be a total package (for me) if the iPhone had it? To me this is something major that Apple left out!!!! Don't get me wrong; it's a beautiful phone...I bought one. But how likely do you all feel a software update will come to allow this? I'm using the 14 day return period to decide if I will be happy I kept it if it is never capable of acting as a Blackberry does with Outlook e-mail.

Have you ever been watching a video on your iPhone and wished you could go back just a few seconds and catch what was just said? Sure on a shorter video it's relatively easy, but on an hour episode, or a movie it's tough.
What is needed is the ability to "scrub" backwards, and forwards? by just using a flick gesture (like the one used for deleting emails) to the left. A small flick would go back 10 seconds, while a more aggressive flick might go back a minute or more. Does this make sense to anybody else?
I find it very tough to quickly backup by small increments. Makes it tough to watch movies on my iPhone, especially if there are heavy accents (no subtitles yet) and you need to backup to catch something that was said.
Here's looking forward to Apples first (and second and third) firmware updates!

While I realize that making an innovative product, like the IPhone, that can do things that all other cell phones can't, isn't it JUST as important to make sure it can do things that nearly all other cell phones CAN? Here are a few things I noticed that I feel wouldn't just be a nice addition or change, but where I feel Apple really dropped the ball... I know a couple of them have been mentioned before on this thread, but I wanted to put my thoughts all together... My apologies.
1) Voice dialing via Bluetooth-How did they miss this? Also, for some reason, if my headset loses it's connection, I'm having a helluva time getting it to reconnect to the IPhone.
2) Alert tones-As someone else mentioned, this is a HUGE problem. The ring tones are not very loud, to begin with. Also, you need to be able to set a different alert for different things. The text message tone is WAY too quiet! Unless it's dead quiet and the phone is right next to you, you will never know you got a message. Which brings me to #3.....
3) Reminder alerts-If you don't hear the initial, very quiet chime, you'll never know you got a message unless you check your phone every couple of minutes. Another must fix.
4) Text messaging to multiple recipients at once, or mass messaging-This is a necessity for me. I work with a team of people and we tend to coordinate out scheduling via text message. So, when I schedule something, I text it to the everyone on my team. With the IPhone, I have to send it to each of them individually. This is something most phones offer. I understand the IM style interface may pose a problem with this. But wouldn't it be a simple adjustment to program the IPhone to (for example, if messaging two people) create two threads from the SMS menu, since the phone would actually be sending out two separate messages?
5) Picture messaging-Another big ball drop. What's the point of taking a picture w/ your phone if you can't immediately send it to your friend's phone? If I wanted to just store it and email it, I'd use a real camera!
6) Safari randomly goes back to the home screen sometimes.
7) Downloadable or custom ringtones... I'm getting mixed info about this. I hear you will soon be able to create custom ringtones on ITunes... What's the latest on this?
Maybe there is a way around some of these issues that I haven't figured out yet. If so, or if you feel any of these are incorrect, please let me know... Otherwise, who knows... Maybe someone on the IPhone product team watches this website for ideas, and will see these things as opportunities to turn a good product into a great product.
* The iPod application includes a handy volume control slider, but does not appear to include a method for changing the playing location of the current audio track (rewind/fast-forward/jump to point). This feature does appear in the video player.
Not sure if someone already pointed this out - I think this feature does exist in the current iPod application - if you just lightly tap the album art - the "audio scrub" controls appear... is that what you were looking for?
* Support for multiple email accounts. This feature may already be present, I can't tell from the demos. These days people have many email accounts including work and one or more Gmail, Yahoo!, and Hotmail accounts.
I've configured three email accounts so far... .mac, Gmail (POP), and my business IMAP account. The Gmail account does seem to be confusing my incoming and outgoing mails... i.e. they are all in my inbox! :gasp: I'm sure I'll figure it out :laugh2:
Anyway - hope this helps.
I agree 100% about the ability to text more than one person at a time... and absolutley, we should be able to send pix messages to one or more person at the same time too.
I'd love Adium for my iPhone... 3rd party apps please :2cool:
And custom ring tones... a must.
I'll bet we get a lot of this sorted out in the next few months.

First off, let me tell you that I absolutely LOVE my iPhone. It is the easiest PDA type phone on the market. I am actually looking at getting on for my husband who has a hard time turning on his computer-and I know he will have no problems using the iPhone.
I do have a fer suggestions (I am sure Apple has heard them all before, but I will reiterate anyways):
1) Flash Player (yes everyone has asked for this one).
2) The ability to Copy, Cut, Paste. This would solve the other individuals issue in calendar. I often have appointments (like doctor appts) that I schedule again on another date and would like to be able to copy them and paste them on a new date. Currently I have to write on paper at doctor and then go back to my PC to copy/paste old appt in new time slot. THIS WOULD BE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT.
3) Ringtones-ability to add new ringtones to iPhone. (Keynote address showed a ringtone tab in iTunes....Why was this deleted?)
4) Games. It would be nice to have games loaded on the iPhone instead of "internet" Safari games. However http://macmost.com/iphonegames/ is a great site. Can anyone comment (probably not) on the rumor that Apple may be partnering with Nintendo to add games to the iPhone for a price?
5) Accessible Adobe Reader. One thing I miss from my old PDA phone is the ability to have ebooks on my phone. When waiting for appointments or simply "killing time" I liked always having a book with me. This would be very nice. Also accessing my son's textbooks via Adobe would be great.
6) I also agree with one of the other individuals who asked for a Contacts icon on the home page. It would be nice not to have to go through the phone icon to look up something on a contact.
Thanks

I've been thinking about this- I love my Iphone but I think it would be perfect if it had these features: (I know some people have already posted some of these).
1. Video recroder (from the built in camera)
2. Enable disk use (i use my ipod as a portable hard drive- i can store all kinds of files on it- and this is a MUST for me.) I thought when i purchased my iphone that this would naturally be a part of it. ITs not.
3. GPS tracking (use celluar towers to identify location?)
4. Video games? Theres no button for games on the front...
5. save images/videos off the internet.

iPhone should automatically unlock when a call comes in so you can instantly see who or what number is calling ...... instead of going thru the laborious task of manually unlocking the phone first. lolol .... just kidding.
(just my opinion)

The ability to turn off auto correct and/or add your own words in the dictionary. I know people may have already asked for this but I cant stress how important this is to me. Not all words are being "stored" by the iphone and it makes texting so difficult. I shorten all my text as much as possible for obvious reasons.

It has a slider control. In the vertical position where you see the album cover -tap the screen once and the slider appears along with a random select and repeat select. Hope this is what you are referring to. It is not available on the cover flow (horizontal view).

This was among my favorite little things about my previous phone - a Nokia 6682. I could lock the keypad and could still answer a call normally should it ring. End the call and the keypad remained locked. That and the 3rd party user-independent voice-dialing app I used are two of the major things I'm missing from my mobile phone experience with the iPhone.

It really does make perfect sense (doesn't it?) If your phone is in "sleep" mode or locked .... if a call comes in - let me decide to answer or send to voice mail without unlocking.

Voice dialing where you could use your stock headset to make the call.

There is WiFi already, put in HSDPA too, and everybody will be happy. I still don't want 3G.
Whats HSDPA?
Thanks.

* The iPod application includes a handy volume control slider, but does not appear to include a method for changing the playing location of the current audio track (rewind/fast-forward/jump to point). This feature does appear in the video player.
It appears in the audio feature as well. While the song is playing, tap the album art once with your finger and a slider will appear under the music title bar (artist name, back button, song title). You can then silde to any point in the track. Tapping the screen again hides the slider bar.

Personally, I'd love to see an alternative scrubbing method implemented. Particularly in longer videos, scrubbing using that slider is very imprecise and doesn't allow you to see what point you've arrived at until you stop and lift off your finger - it's damn near impossible to find the spot you want.
What I'd like to see is the ability to scrub back and forth using a circular motion on the touchscreen glass (akin to the hardware knob on video editing equipment). Of course, the way I'm picturing this is that I'd be able to actually see the video going backward or forward and control the rate with the speed of the touchscreen motion.
That would rock.
Then again, I'm perfectly happy to place this feature request on the back burner if Apple would just get voice-dialing and a few other things implemented in the meantime.

Here are a few feature requests we would like to see added to the iPhone at some point:
I would like to see a better seach function to find contacts. Right now if I don't remember their last name I can't find them. On my Blackberry I liked the fact I could type a portion of the company, their title anything and it would find it. similar to the Address Book function on my MAC. I gues I have too many contact but this would really help me.
