Has anyone heard if this is going to be available...speaking a contacts name and having the phone dial hands free?

It's coming - it's in beta 2 now, and is on the slate for a december/january update release.

Would be an option where you could put your contacts list into "Cover flow" mode, where you could scroll through photos of your contacts, like you do with album covers.:laugh2:

You DO know you had better be ready to back up that statement with some real intel - otherwise get ready to get your flame on...

Oh, and if you DO have any real intel - Steve will hunt you down and sue the beejeebus out of you. Then he'll sit on you until you call him "uncle".

Interesting...how do you know? Are they working on any business features like: Search, cut and paste? Ability to turn the keyboard sideways. A berret word guessing program?

I think the option you were given is a pay service, and I've read that it'sore of a hassle than dialing the actual number.

Hope I'm wrong but i bet we don't hear anymore from the Apple prediction guy.

Quite obviously, I can't report the source... so you can either flame or wait and see if my report is factual. But, I can assure you that what I said is accurate as of today.

Further, a cut and paste patch is nearly ready. It will come in the next update, due for late September/early October. It will work in a similar way to the auto correct, with a bubble option to cut n paste.

I had voice-dialing on my treo for an extra $40. I spent a whole day "training" it and half the time, it got the number wrong. I gave up after a while. It was a lot faster to dial directly (although less stylish).

I hope it's voice RECOGNITION like on Motorola Phones - not just voice pattern matching where a particular user has to "train" it by recording each phonebook entry (or each number for digit dialing).

While calling AT&T customer service I heard something bout if you dial a certain number and ull hear a beep or something and you say the persons name you stored it will call that person, Voice dialing I guess. I think you have to pay for it too.

i only want it if it works right... my time playing with it on other phones has never been something i NEED.... alot of times it called the wrong person... i say derek and it calls dominos pizza... so if they make it work smoothly it would be a great addation... and having to go though every contact and set a voice dial is kinda a pain too

Whether or not you are looking forward to voice dialing may depend upon your past experience. If your experience is the marginally acceptable voice dialing and recognition capabilities of any number or standard cell phones, then your experience would lead you to not care if the iphone has it or not.

However, if your experience is coming from a Windows based pocket pc phone, using Microsoft's Voice Command software, then you appreciate how accurate and wonderfully easy voice dialing can be.

Here's hoping that Apple can at least do as well as Microsoft has done in this area.

voice dialing would be nice, but i find the only time i really use it is in my car, and my car already has a bluetooth system that allows me to voice-dial my iphone.

how would voice dialing be implemented on the iphone? on past phones i've had, you could hold down a specified button until you heard a beep, and then speak the name. when the iphone is in sleep mode, the buttons are unresponsive (except the volume buttons when you're listing to music), as they should be. if you have to turn the iphone on to use voice dialing, then making a few more presses (phone, contacts, then selecting the contact you want to dial) doesn't seem like it's too much more effort than holding the phone up to your ear and saying the name of who you want to call, and is probably quicker too...

Voice Command does indeed work great, but my old Moto V60 did pretty darn good as well. I'd be happy with an experience similar to Motorola.

Well as everyone says I really hope you are right and the features are coming not just to say you are right but really these are features the iPhone sure could use

I've used voice dialing on Treos and WM devices, and both worked well for me. This function would remove one more step that causes me to divert attention from driving that I would LOVE to eliminate. When using the wired headset, it would also be nice to place and answer calls without having to whip out the phone. Personally, I only have a dozen or so contacts I'd want in voice dial, so recognition shouldn't be an issue on my phone. What I do hope is that if they implement it, they incorporate the function into the bt stack and enable the mic/switch to trigger it, as well. Without this functionality, they may as well not bother. It would also need to function independently from the whole on button/slider procedure.

It is indeed their hooking into the bluetooth stack that is causing them to take as long in this as they are. At present, as I understand it, the issue is that hooking into the bluetooth causes significantly quicker battery drain.
