Too bad. Piper Jaffrary's analysts are usually pretty reliable... but anything is possible, especially this early in the game. The June 29th rumor is looking more and more credible.
I would be very surprised if Apple & Jobs snub the iPhone at WWDC. If this is true, that may mean Apple is not planning on having 3rd party developer support for the iPhone after all, either.

Do you have a link to the story you can share?

WWDC will feature new MacBook Pros, but no iPhone (http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9021061&source=rss_topic89/)
(This was linked on the EI home page (http://www.everythingiphone.com/) as well.)

Yeah, this is the show where they are gonna bust out all the stops for Leopard. The iPhone would steal away some of the press from that.

Yeah, this is the show where they are gonna bust out all the stops for Leopard. The iPhone would steal away some of the press from that.Agreed, but as Spin This! pointed out, if the iPhone was going to be opened to 3rd party apps it only makes sense that they would inform the developers attending the conference. If this is true, it is a bad sign for 3rd party apps in the near future.
@Spin This! thanks for the link. I guess I need to check EI's main page more often instead of jumping right to the forums .

It's still all speculation, even if the analyst's track record is good.

Jobs usually spends like 10-15 talking about other stuff Apple is doing first. Maybe he will talk about third party support and other iPhone stuff. The keynote is scheduled for a hour and a half.

Well maybe he will tell us the release date.

I agree. Gave me a chance to use the new "Rumors (http://www.everythingiphone.com/news/rumor/)" category I setup after the Engadget flap.
I'm still on the June 29th bandwagon.

when do they stop working and tweaking the phone and actually start pressing and boxing the phones to make the release day? I wonder how long all that actually takes...

Yeah, they better have started making them by now if they want to feed millions to greedy consumers :laugh2:.
I would bet they started making them a month ago or so, but I do not know much about manufacturing. Anyone want to shed some light on this?
I would be shocked if Jobs did not mention the iPhone and its availability date at the WWDC keynote. This is the Next Big Thing™.

Hopefully he pulls an OPRAH and tells all the guests to look under their seats and there will be iphones for everyone. :)

I still think June 11th will be the day we hear something about a definitive release date.

Without getting FCC approval first, starting manufacturing would be disastrous if they had to make a change.
I'm guessing the assembly lines are warming up right about now.

Didn't they get fcc approval a few weeks back?

I'm guessing the assembly lines are warming up right about now.I think Apple's familiarity with FCC regulations would make the approval process just a formality. At the very least, I am sure they started to make sub-assemblies before they had the approval. If they were concerned about the FCC, I don't think they would have thrown out a release date (vague as it was) since any problems the FCC found would have required redesign and testing time therefore making the June release date impossible.

Let's do the math here. FCC approval takes about 2 months. The iPhone was announced in January. Any software changes really don't need FCC approval afaik. If you check the submission date, it was actually back in March. Did Apple really take 2 months to tweak everything else on the iPhone before submitting to the FCC, even after the unveiling, or did they submit it back in January but actually anticipate (or not) on making changes?
At the very least, I am sure they started to make sub-assemblies before they had the approval.
Right the shells, user manuals, etc could be made. But again it depends on how the units are manufactured as well. A phone is a pretty complex part... you don't want to start piecing stuff together and have a problem with a part of the radio transceiver which is layered under 2 other boards—having to take stuff apart and reassembling it is bad for business.

What I have read in other threads is that it takes 3 to 4 months to get approval. How sure are you of the 2 month figure?
If it does take only 2 months to get approval, you could be correct that there was a revision. I assume that the FCC doesn't not make submission failures public so we would have no way of knowing.
One of the things that leads me to believe that production started before the FCC approval was the multiple reports of vendors shipping components to Foxconn in the beginning of April. I wouldn't have thought that parts would have been shipped a month and a half before they were to be used.
As with most things about the iPhone, this is all speculation. In the end, it doesn't even really matter ;).
