iPhone to come with GPS in 2008!

There's a rumor on the Looney Apple Blog (http://tlab.emotionp.com/?p=47), that the iPhone will come equipped with GPS in early 2008. They don't really buy it, but it would be way cool!!!

I think it is only natural that a future version of the iPhone will have GPS built in. I think Apple will use it for more than just turn-by-turn directions too. For example, wouldn't it be cool for the camera app to add the GPS coordinates of where the picture was taken to the data embedded in the picture?

Ohh yes it would. And maybe it will have a list of "places you have been" Maybe key spots I.E. Statue of Liberty , eifel tower etc will show up on that list.

However even more important to me is to have 3G in the iPhone. This is the only reason I'm not buying the first gen iPhone. I'm counting on enough public outcry, once they experience how slow EGDE is, that Apple will respond by adding 3G to the next rev and get it out sooner rather than later.

I did a side by side comparison with a 3G Blackjack vs an EDGE BB and the speed at which web pages load is dramatically faster on the 3G network. For streaming video EDGE is so slow it's a dealbreaker for me.

What good is an exciting new product like the iPhone which is focused on Entertainment first, without the proper connection speed to deliver smooth Video feeds. Sure they can wait until it loads into the buffer, then start the video which is common place, however who's going to have the patience to wait and wait while the buffer loads?

Then, setting that issue aside, the same slow speed and waiting time will also be encountered when performing any kind of download. It just does not make any sense for the iPhone to be crippled like this.

It's like buying a new Ferrari, only to have a speed limiter cap your top speed at 55mph........

This is the most mind boggling omission that I've ever seen. I feel sorry for the poor unsuspecting customers that buy on blind faith.

Perhaps that's why I have been reading the buzz lately that goes like this: "think of the iPhone like an iPod but with a phone included".

In that context it then collapses the buyers expectations to just another iPod with a phone, therefore if the Video is slow, oh well......

Quite the contrary, I have not forgotten about WiFi at all.

I have not discussed it, as in several other forums the majority of people have no interest in it. I'm speaking of general mobile phone forums, BlackBerry forums, etc.

Personally, I rate WiFi at the top of my personal priority list. I use it everyday, and have been for the last 5 years. I'm using it at this very moment from Starbucks via my ThinkPad laptop.

I have WiFi in my house, my office & my headquarters (5 buildings). I deploy hundreds of ThinkPads in my company and we all use WiFi.

I use an unlocked unbranded Nokia E60 mobile with WiFi. In addition, I have a WiFi enabled Samsung Sync, and a few others.

So in my case I'm a huge advocate of WiFi.

I have a 3G phone now and it is SLOW! I mean, REALLY SLOW! It takes 25 seconds for my phone to load the three homepage (a tiny page designed for phones!)

I don't get why a different kind of gps just cant be added. Using cell towers to triangulate where it is. Couldn't it just be added later?

Honesty and analysis of the current topic is great. I was obviously referring to your revisiting the MBP saga inside someone's GPS thread. Feel free to start a new thread to talk about your first rev MBP and how Apple dropped the ball.

3G would be nice, but the network is still not complete anyway. EDGE is definitely slower, and I've never tried streaming video on an EDGE device, but I can't wait for a second generation iPhone. I'll buy the first, and then pass it down to one of my kids when I buy the second.

If the rumors are true and V2 has more memory, GPS and 3G (and still has good battery life) it will be worth upgrading. At this point I just want to get V1 though :wink:.

I agree. I can't wait for version 1, but I don't know how soon I will be upgrading. I will have to dig deep in my pockets for the first version, and will need to wait a bit to get the second so I don't get screwed financially :D

On the GPS topic, I don't think there is any doubt that it will be in the next generation of iPhone. The question is when that will be released. My guess would be late 2008, but it is all speculation at this point.

If a new iPhone is released before the middle of 2008, I think it is likely to be a lite version (less features and less expensive).

I also think there will be a new generation of video iPods released before the next version of iPhone. As you know, Apple likes to bring one product into the spotlight at a time so they don't have products stealing the thunder from one another.

Yeah, it seems like they rotate between their products. They did the video, then a new nano and finally a new shuffle (I am not sure about the order but...:laugh2:). The light version bit is possible, but I don't even think they will do that. I think they will wait at least a year to release another version, seeing how it plays out and what they can do to improve. THEN they start making it, so my guess would be a year and a half from now. Plenty of time to use version 1 :laugh2:.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I don't think Steve Jobs will allow it to be extremely slow, with how expensive and hyped this gadget is. I would be interested to see how slow it loads, as well. Anybody?

I'm not sure I could even download any streamlining data on my EDGE phones. Either way I can't do it know anyway as I'm in Florida on vacation for the next twelve days.

b. living in LA, i'm not exactly going to be walking anywhere where i would need directions.

it's not a deal breaker for me.

as for the 3G argument, see the thread re: 3G and battery life below. again, this is my opinion, but i would gladly trade better battery life for no 3G especially since the iphone has wifi capabilities.
