I am thinking the OS base features. Email, SMS, Browser Cache, etc are in a separate partition then the music and video, a small partition.
The SMS storage area probably has a set size.

Hello,
I noticed a lot of people are suffering from this issue. It definetely seems that the OS allocates limited memory space for SMS. Personally I have not reached my SMS quota on the iPhone. I
I suggest we all submit a feedback on apple's website requesting improvement in this matter. Here's the link:

I already did myself but if more people do then Apple might consider it in upcoming software updates.

On some GSM phones, the SMS messages are stored on the SIM... so you can take both your contacts and messages from phone to phone.
No idea if they're doing that here or not. Has anyone moved their SIM to another phone, and looked to see if the contacts/sms carry over?
Just one possibility...

So nobody wants to answer the question of how many messages there are when it asks you to delete some? 15 days worth or 3 days worth doesn't tell us how many. 100? 500? 2000?

It may not be number of messages either, though. It may be number of characters total in the SMS system.

Hey guys, I got the same problem today. I deleted some txts and started getting important txts from 2 days ago (got like 40 txts at once when i deleted stuff). This is while it was still saying ALMOST full. Well, according to my bill, I had sent/received about 1200 txts when it started getting full and eventually got full.
I think we should all call them up or something and request unlimited txt storage (I have 8 freakin GB) or at least archiving conversations. Also, forwarding txt messages and being able to send a single message to multiple people would be nice too.

Thank you for finally posting numbers!! :)
Yes, I think they should definitely allow more messages to be stored! I had a Treo with 32 megs and it held many more messages than this. In fact, I never deleted my messages and could look back at really old conversations. This is silly and only a little excusable with it being the first version.

I had 4-5 conversations. Most are very small. A couple have about 15 days of stuff... But since an SMS message is limited in size the device should not care how many message you have.

Because some of us need to keep a log of text messages for business purposes. Most of all its our prerogative.

I had about 750 when I first started to see the "almost full" message. Oh and I also learned that it NEVER tells you that it IS full, so you just stop getting texts until you delete some then they all sporadically arrive.

couldnt have said it better, there needs to be an option for this saving to sim and to fone, i need to keep some of these conversations, they are very important.

We've gotten pretty far in iPhone modification to the point where we can explore the file system of the iPhone using WinSCP or iBrickr and edit system files. Why can't anyone find the system file that specifies the sms inbox limit? I guarantee it's just a simple value somewhere that says something stupid like "<smsinboxlimit> = 200 KB" or something. Just change that 200 to 9999999 and we're good.
What's the best way to find the file that specifies the limit size?
