I would not be surprised if there are no major updates. The last thing that they would want to do is make major functional changes to an interface that a million people have come accustom to. Also think about how little the ipod interface has changed since it was first introduced.
Just my opinion

maybe no major updates, but i don't know that major updates are needed. maybe just tweaks...adding of sms, ringtones, copy/paste, a2dp to name a few. they aren't major interface changes per se, but tweaks to make the overall experience of the iphone better

No major updates. I don't know why people thought there would be in the first year.

I think some of us think there "ought" to be updates to address serious shortcomings we discovered, like no copy and paste. I sound like a broken record but it's simply amazing that this thing came out without it.

Yes, I am starting to think that there WONT be any major upgrades! Steve Jobs winked and nodded to get us all to buy the iPhone (which is an unfinished product)...hinting at Flash, and how easy it would be to deliver updates.
I love this phone, but it needs A LOT of updates to add functions that I THOUGHT would have come with it. I mean, no Copy/Paste? No Multiple color-coded calanders? Come on apple!!! No excuse!!!
This phone was NOT ready for prime-time, and needs a few updates to kick it into gear, which i feel sadly will not come :( My opinion.

sorry, bud. you lost all credibility after that one.
unfinished? are you serious? name me one generation one cell phone, hell, any product that was as polished and relatively bug free as the iphone.
and yes, there will be updates. will you come back when there are and eat your words?

Hey, I would LOVE to eat my words!!! If I eat my words, then we all win!!
The reason I feel this way, (and granted I've been a Mac user since my first Apple IIC), is that It feels like Apple is putting it's own commercial interests in front of the overall usability of the phone.
YouTube is my main example. That was a great app for their marketing team to exploit, but in the world of smartphones, I guarantee more business users would like copy/paste, multiple calandars, the ability to edit MS office documents.
For a generation 1 phone, The GUI is above and beyond what it could have been. But the absence of so many ESSENTIAL functions is disheartening and takes away from the true potential of the iPhone.
My guess is that Apple will release major software updates that will parallel major hardware upgrades.
That's my opinion...and again...I hope I am wrong, I just cant help be pessimistic.

Well said. Dont mind the apparent Apple fanboys. The iPhone is lacking in a lot of areas, regardless of what anyone says.
I feel there are three kinds of people on this board.
1) The first-time smartphone users. These people wont find any flaws with the iPhone, because this is their first smartphone, and does a ton more stuff than their previous phone did. First time cell-phone users also apply.
2) The people who have come from a previous smartphone (Treo, BB, etc). These are the people who are saying the iPhone lacks certain critical features (copy/paste, better calendar, to-do's, synced notes, etc). The iPhone does pale in comparison to these phones on the feature list.
3) The Apple fanboy. Even if these people know a certain area is lacking, they take the denial route and defend the phone against any person talking bad about it.
Unfortunately, I feel this forum is filled with types 1 and 3.

That's me...I came over from a Treo 700p, and I am happy. But the treo had a lot more functionality, and was a much more productive tool.
It crashed constantly, and was ugly and heavy. But at least I could copy/paste rows of text, color-code my calanders, and edit MS office documents.

I guess the old saying goes...
You can't make everyone happy.
It's funny, everytime someone finds out I have an iPhone they say
"No problems yet? But I heard that...."
and my response is..
"I love my iPhone, but you will always have people unhappy with something."
I guess for me the glass is half full. I look at the alternative. I could have a phone without internet, without weather checks, mapquest type thing.
In conclusion
I heart my iPhone

Dont get me wrong, I love my iPhone too...I just think it could be better. Apple has never been about "well, at least it isn't as bad as the competition." It's always been about BLOWING the competition out of the water, and CHANGING the game.
The iPhone has the best GUI out there, but definitly needs some updates.
Are you truly satisfied without copy/paste, color-coded calanders, and the lack of ability to update MS office documents? If you are, that's totally cool, I'm not ragging on you, you have the right to your opinion. But I am personally NOT satisfied without those things, I think they are essential to being productive on a mobile smartphone.
This is my opinion, you have the right to your "glass half-full" opinion too.

Ya think? Do you think you could give them a couple of months to put something together? These ridiculous threads started the day after the iPhone went on sale.
Here's a novel idea, if the phone isn't what you want right now, don't buy it until it is. Why would you buy something then immediately start complaining about it and demanding updates?
You have to wonder where this instant gratification culture came from... "gimmie, gimmie, gimmie - now, now now!"

tharmsen is right; the first incarnation of the iphone was/is not meant to be a business tool, therefore it's missing some key business apps. This phone is basically for ppl who want a cool phone, an awesome video ipod, and a nifty internet device. There may be further models, or even updates to this model, that will appeal to business/power users. We all have to hurry up and wait.

Naw, not entirely true, Steve Jobs (and ATT) have both hinted that the iPhone would be a good tool for business: (although I do agree in its current state it is not necessarily a good business tool).

QUOTES:
1) TITLE: "Should firms pick up the iPhone?"
EXCERPT: "...Despite hints from Apple chief Steve Jobs that the iPhone is being used by some businesses to access Exchange servers."
2) TITLE: "AT&T to target iPhone to enterprise" EXCERPT: "AT&T plans to market the iPhone to business users in addition to consumers but analysts aren’t recommending that enterprises supply workers with the phones."
Anyways, this is way off topic, you have your opinion, and I have mine. We all love our iPhones, and want to see them improve in the future, so no need to disagree too much about anything. I just wish Apple would fix some of those features lacking in version 1.01...we'll see, I hope they do.

I think one poster described the iPhone perfectly, by calling it a toy and not a tool. I also think that Apple misjudged the customer base of the iPhone. I really believe that Apple's target customer base, was well to do teenagers and young adults. Hence the, No Sale to business customer's policy. That policy was a bit of an indication from Apple, that the iPhone was NOT a business tool. I don't know if anyone remembers the first Windows Mobile device with a color screen from Sprint, (The Hitachi G-1000, gigantic but a workhorse), it came out about six years ago and runs circles around the iPhone. I think we all expected alot more out of a (marketed as), revolutionary/breakthrough device than what we have gotten. The beautiful thin craftsmanship of the iPhone is being wasted, if one has to carry another PDA/Phone, just to cover what the iPhone doesn't do. I still love my iPhone for what it does, but I have certainly made it my after 5pm, recreational phone. Hopefully, Steve Jobs will realize the want of the business community for his product, and seriously upgrade the next iPhone. I'm sure from all the Complaints Apple hears on the iPhone each day, they have realized this...M

All Apple has to do is license wireless active sync from Microsoft so you can have exchange connectivity... this will solve a lot of their problems.
The other important issue would be opening up to 3rd party developers to create apps for the iphone.
Just these two things would be an easy and important first step.
Apple need to learn to play in the sandbox with others.... Play ball APPLE, PLAY BALL!!

You know what.... Steve needs to grow up... Apple has a good thing going, but so did Sony with Betamax. You see where that ended up.
The whole reason Microsoft has been so successful is because they have always licensed their software with other companies... now, I'm not saying that Microsoft plays well with others, but com'mon... apple doesnt even have their own working version of a wireless sync...
If they want business users, they need to play with business platforms... the entire business world is not going to change their format for syncing to appease apple.... apple needs to play ball!

I'm starting to feel like there may be no major update either. From a business stand point, why release a major update??? Apple has heard all the crying, they can just re engineer the iPhone, with everything people have said the current model lacks. Don't be surprised if, no major update, only iPhone 2nd Generation (600.00 more dollars). We can't really get angry, if this is what Apple decides. We (well, most of us anyway) understood (when we purchased the iPhone) that you always take a chance when you buy the first version of anything. Mark

I fall between the type 1 and 2 in that 3 item list. I too have been an Apple user since the Apple IIC. Overall I am content with the phone, but I do tend to agree that we will not see any major updates, just tweaks here and there. My list is somewhat short of things I would like to see or as I interpret as being missing since this is the most revolutionary device to hit the market (I think those are Steve's words). If the follow is added or corrected I think I will overall be happy rather than just content. I feedback this list every day too, which I am sure means they now ignore it.
All forms of volume are too low.
Maps lacks text/email function to send direction lists
Safari crashes often
There are no search abilities on the phone
Not compatible with 10.3.9
No cut and paste
No flash/Java
No MMS (this is beyond annoying)
Phone antenna is not strong, calls drop very often, does not appear to have the actual signal strength displayed all the time.
No voice dialing
More ring tones
MP3 ring tones/custom tones
Ability to hide the home screen and actually have the wallpaper/clock there. (1 home click = home, the second hides the secondary function icon rows)
Ability to remove/hide home screen icons.
Ability to save e-mail attachments
Ability to edit/save e-mail attachments
Ability to turn off the “slide to unlock”

I would like to add a little humor/serious thought to this thread. Thank you in advance for indulging me. I (Mark) am going to play the role of Steve Jobs in this writing. This is only fiction!!!
It is a beautiful Monday morning in Cupertino, California. I (Steve) sit here in amazement of the great corporation, I have built. As I began to think about my larger than life wealth. I have a nagging feeling, my stock price was down all last week. I made tons of money on iDay and the following weeks. The iPhone craze is now starting to wane, what shall I do??? I make a quick call to Apple's, customer support VP. I am happy to hear, there is a great reduction in the amount of complaint calls concerning the iPhone. I realize that, people have began to accept what the iPhone doesn't do and love what it does do.
I start to think though, what do I do about all the customers waiting for a major update??? As I ponder that thought, I think deeply about my customer base (while always keeping the shareholders in mind). I have a large base of customers, new to Apple through an iPod or iPhone sale. I then, have an even larger base of "Apple Fanatics", that will buy and defend anything I place on the market. The one time Apple buyer, may or may not buy from me again. The "Apple Fanatic" will most certainly buy from me again. I love the "Apple Fanatics", I love the almost, cult following I have created, and I love their deep seated loyalty to Apple and myself. I would like to do something nice for them, in return for all their loyalty (like a major update). Ahh yes, but I have to stay on track here. I began this thought process because the stock price is down. The first time Apple buyers want in a software/hardware update, what amounts to a new iPhone. They have to be crazy, don't those people understand that updates do not drive up stock prices, new and improved item launches, do!!! I hate to screw my loyal "Apple Fanatic" customer base. I am a businessman first though. I have a responsibility to the shareholders, sympathetic CEO's and companies do not last long. I rationalize in my mind (to help me sleep better at night), those fools (customers wanting a major update), should have never bought iPhone Gen 1. They should have understood, the first offering of anything is not the best. I take a sip of my highly charged "West Coast Java", it is then that I make my decision. There will be no major update, there will be an iPhone Gen 2 launch. Hmm, I might make alot of iPhone owners angry with the decision. Oh what the hell, I will always have my very strong, very large, "Apple Fanatic" customer base. Let me make a mental note, I must throw in a free case with iPhone Gen 2 to thank them.
I will have to remember to call my bank and tell them to prepare for the windfall of cash that will be coming in, post iDay 2. I am so glad I thought this problem out so early in the morning. I am finding myself needing more and more time in the day to figure out how to spend ALL THE FREAKING CASH I HAVE!!! Maybe I'll call Bill (of Microsoft) later, we can't really work together as two companies, but he might have found new ways to spend all this cash. Ahh yes, life is certainly great. Wow, I must go now. I have 27 missed calls on my iPhone. How could that be??? I have the volume turned all the way up. I must venture into the development department today and command them to fix my low volume. Hmm, maybe the customers were right, maybe there is a volume issue. Nah couldn't be, just a glitch in my phone only. I'm the freaking CEO, I should Know, The hell with all those whiners anyway....:laugh2:
I hope you have enjoyed my humorous yet possibly true scenario from Steve Jobs. I will again say, this is not true nor quoted by Steve. I just wrote how I would think if I were Steve...M

I was also thinking of the possibility of Apple making major updates for the iPhone but making customers buy them like we do with OS major updates... Just a thought. I'm sure praying for some major updates though! It just seems like Apple would be sacrificing a lot of customers if they only did gen 2 iPhone and no major updates for gen 1.

Everyone here had 14 days to decide whether or not to keep it. Yes, there are shortcomings. I deal with them the best I can. But dealing with them on a beautiful iPhone compared to dealing with them on a clunky Treo, is worth the tradeoff.
Guys, just give it time. Apple isn't going to release "passifier" updates and possibly upset the balance of software/hardware compatibility on the phone without testing it extensively. Just give it time.

Why do you guys/gals always call other people's comments bashing??? You are entitled to how you feel and so is the other poster. Instead of rushing to call someone a "basher" why not take the time to read up on "OPEN DIALOG"..M

Thank you!
On one hand people are told, should they have any doubts about buying an iPhone, "updates will come, don't worry!" Yet when they make the slightest comment about updates it is called bashing.

It appears now that Apple may be putting its effort into making games for the iPhone, instead of going back to the basics and fixing some of it's current shortcommings.
In my opinion, Apple is looking for more ways to sell us things (like ringtones, games, and MP3s) instead of adding the basic features we need like Copy/paste, color-coded calanders, and MS office support.
Apple should have their programmers work on making the iPhone more stable, and productive, and then once they have the rock-solid device the iPhone has the potential to be, they should indulge in further capital ventures.
This is juts my opinion, you have the right to disagree.

How on Earth do you get all of that from the article? Where does it say that Apple has given up on other features of the iPhone in favor of games?!?! Do you think Apple employs one programmer for the iPhone and if he's focused on game development the other ideas/improvements get pushed to the back burner?

You sir, should probably seek employment with Apple. Anyone who says anything that is even in the least bit against Apple. You vigorously jump on them in defense of Apple. I think you search the threads looking to tell someone they are wrong (since you have in so many threads). Once again, EVERYONE HAS AND IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OWN OPINION. First, I never called you any name. I suggested what you were making yourself look like (there is a difference). Second I never said you did not have a right to your opinion. I am merely stating, that you ridicule everyone that is not an Apple Fan boy (now that was calling you a name, but in a good way), such as yourself. When you ridicule some people it makes them hesitant to post, therefore stifling their thoughts (the whole reason for a forum). Everyone interprets what they read or see differently (kind of like Fox News, We report you decide). It is not right of you to make your opinion the gospel, it is only that, your opinion. You should have read what the poster said ("only my Opinion") were his words. He did not say it was fact or what Apple intended to do. You read a little of what he said and took off with it. You have done it in many post, and there is no need for it. You did not inform or help anyone with your comments, you only lashed out at the poster. Take it down a thousand dude, we all clearly understand your alliance and fanaticism concerning Apple. You do not have to continue to beat us over the head with it in every thread, Good Day, Sir....M

Excuse me, but my expressing my opinion is stifling others? What about their comments stifling me? If I say something in defense of the iPhone then I'm trying to preach a "gospel" but if I jump on the bandwagon and repost endlessly that "no updates will ever come from Apple" then I'm just expressing my opinion? Please forgive me if I don't buy that.
Have I ever told someone not to express themselves like you're telling me not to do right now? No.
I don't start threads saying "the iPhone is God's gift to the telecommunications industry" but when I see someone post something that's nothing more than a malicious rumor intended to dissuade people from liking their phone or from buying an iPhone like "LOOK! Apple is stopping all development for the iPhone and focusing on games!!!" then I'm the person "acting childish"? Oh, and I'm sorry but telling me my opinion is "making me look like a childish trouble maker" is name calling. If I said "your opinion makes you look like an **** (insert your favorite colorful metaphor here)" wouldn't you take offense? I bet you would.
Now, how about you stop deriding me for expressing my opinion and practice what you preach? Everyone has a right to their opinion, right? I assume that includes me.
As for me "beating everyone over the head", LOL... yeah, right. If I report over and over and over again that the iPhone is broken, or endlessly repeat "I want cut/paste" or claim that "no updates are coming" in countless threads... I'm just expressing my opinion. But if I respond to those comments then I'm beating people over the head? This is getting almost comical.
How about we stop this silliness and get back to discussing the iPhone?

I'm all for that, we both have spoke. I have a question, have you or anyone else noticed any differences in their iPhone since the update. I did not totally restore my phone before adding the update. I therefore haven't seen any changes. Has anyone noticed any difference in any of the functions??? Also do the people in this thread think it would be better if I do a full restore. I'm mostly concerned about my volume level. I never heard an increase in volume after the update. I can live with everything else. I also carry my PPC-6700 with me for tasks the iPhone won't do..M

There is one massive thread that discusses the update and the features of it, some features are imagined and some real. The only thing I've noticed is that my phone has officially crashed once post update and it didn't do that before hand... but that doesn't mean anything really.

Oh, and I don't believe a full restore will be required unless you've hacked your phone with Jailbreak. I did have iphoneringtonemaker installed prior to the update and it didn't force a restore. If you do force a restore and apply the update, I doubt you'll see any features you wouldn't have seen without the restore.

I have lots of respect for the hackers, but no hacks on my iPhone. If Apple doesn't put it out, my iPhone won't have it. Thanks for the info, gotta run now. BTW: glad we could have an intelligent debate and move on. Maybe the whole world needs to take a page out of our book...Thanks again..M

Because if you go by the "Palm Treo" model (or any other Palm/Windows Mobile platform smartphone) by NOT updating the operating system fully, you intentionaly give smartphone users an incentive to buy new phones every few years or so.
Apple does this as well. If you notice, with each iPod update, Apple adds new software features, but doesn't include ALL new software features in ALL models. For example, I had an iPod 5G and when they released the iPod 5.5G, they updated the 5G iPod as well but DID NOT include the search functionality. Now, there was no reason for Apple to leave that functionality out of the older models of iPods, other than to make the newer model seem "fresher" and more appealing for people to buy. There were no inherent hardware limitations as such.
Will Apple do this with the iPhone? I sure hope not, because I have one, and I want it to last as long as possible before I feel the need to upgrade to the next version. But whether or not they follow the status quo remains to be seen.
Again, We all have our opinions.

Except that some Windows Mobile 2003 phones got free updates to WM 5, which was a major change. (Big dependence on whether the hardware was there for it.)
Phones that came with WM5, often got later WM5 updates with new features and reader apps.
Nowadays, a large number of WM5 phones have, or are getting, free updates to WM6.
Carriers are doing these free updates because they can keep their customers with contracts happy, without having to subsidize new phones. The cost to the carrier is probably less than ten bucks a user, which is peanuts in comparison to the return.

maybe no major updates, but i don't know that major updates are needed. maybe just tweaks...adding of sms, ringtones, copy/paste, a2dp to name a few. they aren't major interface changes per se, but tweaks to make the overall experience of the iphone better
Maybe these are not major from your perspective as a user, but they are definitely major from the engineering point of view. For example, adding copy and paste to this UI is definitely a major effort. Ditto for picture messages, a2db... these are definitely major changes to add from scratch.

I agree with Tharmsen... Im sure they have multiple teams of programmers working on different projects... But far as the iPhone goes.. I see it more of a well rounded device, it doesnt do one thing Perfect. It does a little of everything. But do have to admit if I was purchasing a phone for buisness I would have gone with a Blackberry, mainly for the security. You cant beat the "Kill" feature they have if you were to loose the phone.
For those of you unfamiliar with blackberrys, if you were to loose your phone, you can have the phone locked, disabled, or have the phone completely erase itself by remote (Depending on what type of service you are paying for.. ie enterprise, etc.. )
I see the iPhone as more of a entertainment device more than anything. Awesome for someone that traveld alot. yay map app!

So if you're looking for something it will tell you where it is.. Love it! I think I have to say Its my fav feature..
