Currently Apple has a standard one year warrenty for all their products, and for many of them an optional extended warrenty. Cingular's warrenty policy is very different. Will they chose to go with one of these policies or will they come up with something totally different? I personally would not liek to bu this expencive and high-tech a produc without an outstanding warrenty/return policy.

I would expect the extended warranty to take the form of Applecare. As has been pointed out in a different thread, do not expect Applecare to cover drop damage or theft. For that type of coverage, the general consensus was that the best option is to add the iPhone to your home owners/renters insurance policy.

I don't know about you but i LOVE getting new ipods via waranty. I don't know why but looking at the back of my ipods all scratched and then getting a new one in which I can see myself is amazing. The iphone wont be scratched like that so its no biggie.

but the problem isn't the iphone getting scratched. the problem is if the screen cracks or there is harware failure. and since the iPhone is so much more expencive than an iPod so they will want to fix the hardware problem and just give u the same outer case

With this kind of investment, Applecare (if it's available) will be a no-brainer.

I remember hearing that in the deal that Verizon passed up Apple wanted to be in full control of the hardware support.
