Telekinesis (http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/) rocks!
It's been mentioned before in other threads which now appear to be dead.
It's an incredible piece of free software (at this point) still being developed, but it works. I can now remotely access over 200GB of movies, all my iTunes library (20GB of music) and other less exciting stuff on my home computer and play them on my iPhone from wherever I want (work or anywhere else, it could be done from anywhere with wifi access). It took some time to make it work (with the help of members in the discussion group) but now it's as easy as clicking on a bookmark in my iPhone safari. I had to figure out what dyndns was about, and retrospectively, it's easy.
Movies have to be in m4v format. All of Battlestar Galactica and Law and Order and the Stargate TV shows... What a treat.
Mov and avi formats don't work.
And, darn, it's only for the Mac.

geordisjd - I used iPhone remote and it's fantastic but I don't know how to configure it to let me use it from outside of my own wifi network.
Do you think you could post how to do it? I read through the google group for the program quick when it first came out but there were no detailed guides.

How is your computer connected to the internet? Is it connected directly to a router/modem with an ethernet cable (in which case the answer is easier) or is the connection wireless? Does your router/modem have a static or dynamic IP address?

I've got a wired connection to an actiontec router (verizon fios issue). I believe i'm dynamic IP - but not certain.

Most routers have a dynamic IP address, so let's assume you do.
First, you have to get into your router's settings and open the ports 5010/5012 to your computer's IP address (usually something like 192.168.x.x).
Next you have to get a dynamic DNS address or "domain" (go to dynDNS.com for a free setup) that will always point to your computer's IP address. Let's say you've called it "myname.dyndns.org". (They have easy tutorials to set it up.)
Of course iRemote must be running.
Then, write https://myname.dyndns.org:5010/ in your iPhone's safari's address bar and it should be directed to your domain name, which will direct it to your router, which will direct it to your computer.
If any of this is not clear, let me know. Got to go to work. I'll be happy to try to help.

Thanks for the instructions. Ok, I have a snag somewhere as connecting to the dyndns account I setup doesn't work from the phone - it says safari can't find server. I don't know if I opened the port properly on the router - it is a little tricky on this verizon router.
this is what the router is reporting:
networked computer/device: 192.168.1.8
networked address: 192.168.1.8 (both obtained from ifconfig in terminal)
public ip address: blank
protocols: iPhone Remote - TCP 5010-5012 -> Any
WAN connection type: All Broadband Adapters
Status: Active
See any glaring errors in all of this? THanks again for your help, I really want to get this working!

so I'm actually having a hard time geting it working right... I've got a 700gb movie collection that I've ripped using HandBrake into .m4v files with h264. All of the movies play great on my AppleTV and range in size from 640x480 (old copied VHS tapes) to 1920x1080i HD DVD rips.
I can use a web browser and play any of my TV show rips, or the SMALL movie rips. Whenver I click on a large enough file, I get an immediate failure. I assume this is some kind of bug in the Telekinesis code...
Here's whats wierd... I've got an iTunes store TV show that streams great to the iPhone -- but none of my other files will. I can stream any of my TV shows to a web browser, but they come up on the iPhone and give me a little "cant play" symbol.
I presume I've just got my files with a slight incompatibility ... but I'm wondering if anyone has an idea what it is?

Just to let you guys and girls know. i have been using SOONR this is nearly the same as telekenisis (iremote). you can access all of your computer. open PPS files in fact view every file on your MAC (intel) or PC. i also use the skype option that comes with it cost me 40cents to call the UK instead of $10.00.
it comes with spotlight, mail etc,. check it out.

I'm just now testing SoonR (PC) and so far it looks good. Was hoping it allowed access to Outlook Notes, but alas it does not.
So far I see it being very useful for accessing Office docs, PDFs, photos, and email that might not otherwise be on my iPhone. Not really useful though for music and video though. Being able to access that data from any Web-connect computer is a plus too.
For media I've tried TVersity, which uses your computer only as a server (no third party server involved) but it would not start properly. If I can get that to work it looks cool (will transcode video on-the-fly and stream it at both WiFi and EDGE speeds). Benefit to that is that if I am at home it will stream from my PC to my iPhone at WiFi speed.
FYI: I use Onesuite.com (prepay LD) for international calls and pay about 2.5 cents for UK calls--17.5 cents to mobile numbers. It can be setup to recognize the caller ID from your phone, so no PIN needs to be entered. (No affiliation.)

It sounds like you're doing everything right. Do you still have problem connecting? I have noticed there is a delay establishing a dns.org connection to an IP address and when it actually becomes active.
If you can't connect that way, maybe you can try a direct connection to your modem, For that, you have to use the IP address reported by your browser (not the one reported by System preferences). Go here (http://whatismyip.com/) to find it.
Enter that directly in the iPhone browser: https://myotherIPaddress:5010/.
It should work. The problem with it is that if your IP (as reported by the browser) changes, it stops working and you have to enter the new reported IP in the iPhone. I noticed that my IP address doesn't change frequently. It will if I have to restart the computer, which I seldom do. Another possibility is to change your IP address (in the router's settings) from dynamic to static.

I think you might be overestimating the limits of what an iPhone Safari can play. Small files will load a lot easier than large ones. All my m4v files are no larger than 480x270. I'm not sure if there is an actual limit to the total size of what can be played. All my TV shows are around 600MB and play fine. Here's some info (http://developer.apple.com/iphone/designingcontent.html) on the limits of iPhone safari/video from Apple. It says that only 10MB movies can be loaded (which is true with .mov format), so I was really surprised that 600MB of .mv4 would play at all, but there must be a limit to the file size anyway. I don't think it's a Telekinesis bug.

I checked my real IP address from whatismyipaddress and tried the following link:
https://ipaddress:5010/
and got a server not found. iphone remote is running, so I assume the port is not forwarded? https://localhost:5010/ on my wifi network does work.
The fios setup is strange for port forwarding. Man, I really wish I could get this running!

it sounds like the router is not configurated properly. I got this to work with both an Earthlink modem and a Comcast Linksys router. Both of them are pretty user-friendly now. You may want to contact your service provider to configure the router's settings if they're not obvious. Once the settings are right, it's really pretty simple and reproducible, at least when I'm not using dyndns, which doesn't seem to be working reliably today.

there shouldn't be anything to activate to play a movie in the proper format.m4v videos and mp3 tracks from iTunes will play by just launching them. If none of them do, u may have defective software. I would reinitialize the iPhone if necessary and reinstall.

If your safari is unable to open any m4v or mp3 files, even after restarting the phone, yes, I would reinstall iPhone software. It's always possible that a m4v file is too big for your connection speed or even the iPhone, but a mp3 file is small enough that it should load.Try a very small file first. You can also test your upload speed on your computer (speakeasy speed test). If your upload is decent (at least several 100's kbps), then there's no reason why an MP3 shouldn't load and play.

This reminds me of Orb. Except Orb allows you to play live TV as well so long as you have a tuner card in your PC (it's only for PCs I think). It takes a little while to configure and I'm not sure if it's entirely supported by iPhone but it's worth checking out. I have a few friends that use it (non-iPhone users) and they swear by it. It also supports quicktime format.
Telekinesis seems pretty sweet though.

Sorry if all of this is redundant to what you know:
1. Did you set up Remote's preferences, password, checked open apps and stream media and restart the server?
2. When you enter your computer's IP address as given by the Mac's system preferences (https://192.168.X.XX:5010/) in your computer's safari, do you connect with Remote (get the homescreen) or do you get an error message you can't connect? If you connect, then Remote is communicating correctly with the computer.
3. Did you access your router settings? You do that by entering your ROUTER's IP address as given by System preferences (usually 192.168.X.X) in Safari. It will ask you for a password. Once you're in there, you must forward to your computer's IP address.
With Comcast, I'll write "Remote" "Port range "5010 to 5012" for both protocols (TCP and UDP) and forward to 192.168.X.XX and save/apply.
By the way, this is assuming your computer is hardwired into your router with an ethernet cable and not wireless.
4. Get your IP address as given by Safari here: http://whatismyip.com/
5 . Finally, go to your iPhone and write https://theIPfromwhatmyIP:5010/
Safari should now ask you for Remote's screenname and password after warning you that the site is insecure.
Notice that your IP address from whatsmyIP may change from time to time (mine hasn't changed in 10 days, but will occasionally - "dynamic address") and you have then to enter the new address in iPhone to connect.
An alternative is to get a dynamic server that will point to your computer's IP even when whatsmyIP changes, but it gets a lot more complicated. If you have wireless, then it's a LOT, LOT more complicated if you want to connect outside your home network.

I am so lost. Usually I can pick up on how things work but this thread has me stumped.
What is it you need to get started?
Are you using a Mac or PC?
Is there some software that needs to be installed "somewhere" to allow the iPhone to access the files on your computer?
As far as ripping the movies I have no problem being able to do that ..... so once they are ripped do you put them into a special folder?
I am sorry but I need the directions from the beginning. If you don't mind and if you have the time.

1. Go on Telekinesis's website (http://code.google.com/p/telekinesis/) to get information on an application (Remote) that allows you to connect remotely to your computer, any connected hard drive and even your iDisk from anywhere as long as you have a wifi connection (Edge is too slow), using Safari on your iPhone. It includes being able to open any picture file (jpg, png, etc), text and word documents, listen to all of your itunes' music library and watch your m4v (MP4) movies directly on your iPhone. You install Remote on your computer, you keep it running and make sure you configure its preferences.
2. It's a Mac app only.
3. You can access any folder or file on your Mac (but of course, not all files or apps will open. Safari can play an MP3 file, it can't run Photoshop).
3. Once it's running on your Mac, follow the instructions on post #27 of page #3 of this thread to
a) Make sure Remote is properly configurated and can be accessed by your computer's Safari
b) Access your router's settings to forward Remote's ports to your computer's IP address.
c) Get your IP address from whatsmyIP.com to enter in your iPhone
d) enter that IP address properly in your iPhone's Safari, so it will connect with Remote on your computer and from there, access all the data on the said computer.
The discussions' forum on Telekinesis' site is particularly helpful.

You're welcome. I'd be happy to help people establish a dynamic DNS service if they need it too. I knew nothing about it 2 weeks ago, but it is the key to ongoing working connection for cable modems and routers that have a changing IP address.

Here's my issue.. How can I access this remotely? My iphone and my laptop are both on the same wireless router. If I go upstairs and myother router pics up the iphone then I can't get the address to work?? Also, How can I do this over edge?? I have a router set up on 192.168.1.1 then 0.1...
Please let me know!! I'd love to mess with my wife when she's on the computer and i'm on the road...now I can see what she's looking at during the day!!! I only hope it's porn.
I am having alot of trouble with this... when I type in my IP address it says it can't open the page. what am I doing wrong?
Would it be a problem that my router is running off a windows computer?

Did you launch Remote on your computer and set up the preferences (password, server, check open apps and share media)?
Check that Remote is communicating with the Mac through your computer's Safari - enter https://yourcomputersIP:5010/ in the address bar (the IP address given by the Mac's System preferences). Remote's homescreen should appear.
Next go into your router's settings (accessed by writing the Router's address in safari's address bar - whatever router is connected to your computer) and forward the ports 5010, 5012 to your COMPUTER's IP address.
Next, get your IP address as seen by Safari at whatsmyIP.com. It will be something like 65.166.245.175.
Now go to the iPhone's Safari. Write https://whatsmyIPaddress:5010/ in the address bar and launch. You should get a window that will ask you to enter your screen name and password as entered in Remote's preferences and then you should get the Remote's homescreen.

I'm not sure what you mean by your router is "running off a windows computer". This application only works on a Mac. It would work on your MacBook connected to your router. Follow the instructions in the previous post.

It should work from Edge too, but slowly. It works for me with a dynDNS address. The registered IP address entered in your dynDNS settings is that of your computer's (192.168.X.XX), and your https://dyndnsaddress:5010/ keeps pointing to it by updating the real IP address (found at whatsmyIP.com) as it changes.
Notice that it is httpS (not http) that needs to be entered or it won't work.

In your dyndns page, you enter your computer's address as given by system preferences. It doesn't change. It's 192.168.X.XX, not your router IP, which is the one that ends in X.X
It's your dynDNS host's job to keep track of your whatsmyIP address, which changes.

my what'smyip address is 12.24.148.xxx
Now my router has 192.168.1.x on ports 5010 to 5012 redirected..
my "dyndns" is pointed to 192.168.1.x ...however under the ip input is says that the auto detect found 12.24.148.xxx so which do I use to access from outside my network...
As of right now I can access it on my safari (computer's) by typing https://mydyndns.com:5010... however if I do that via the iphone via edge

if your use a dynamic address, it registers your computer's IP address (not your router !) and keeps track of the autodetected one all the time, even when it changes, always pointing to your constant computer's IP .
For remote access on your iPhone, you use your created dynsns address (something like johnsmith.org). It will point to your computer's IP despite the changing detected IP.

Sounds like you did everything right. If you write yourcomputersIP:5010/ in your Safari's browser, you get remote's homepage, right? And you've set up a screen name/password/restart the server in Remote's preferences?
I've had to restart the iPhone before it actually connected.
What dynamic DNS client are you using? I've had better luck with the free Javascript dynamic DNS Client for easyDNS .

Buy using dyndns, you ARE using your real IP address (whatsmyIP), because your dyndns address keeps track of it, even when it changes and directs it to your local IP address (the 192...). That's the point of using dyndns.
If you want, you can try bypassing the dynamic DNS stuff. My real IP address rarely changes, so it can also be used directly by iPhone.
It's a lot easier.
Just launch and configure Remote as usual, preferences and all.
As usual, make sure Safari communicates with Remote on your computer by putting https://yourcomputersIP:5010/ in that browser, which confirms the router is correctly configurated.
Next, go to iPhone's Safari and write https://whatsmyIP:5010/
in the address bar. It should connect right away.
The advantage of doing this is that it will bypass all the dynDNS stuff which can be moody and hard to configure. It will work from anywhere.
The disadvantage is that if your whatsmyIP changes, it doesn't work anymore and then you have to enter the NEW whatsmyIP in the iPhone's safari. However, in practice (at least with Comcast and Earthlink), whatsmyIP doesn't change that frequently. Mine has been the same for weeks.
so I'm actually having a hard time geting it working right...
I had this same problem and it's because the old version of handbrake used to do something (I'm pretty sure it's anamorphic imaging) which makes it impossible to view on iPhone.
On the new handbrake I use high-rez iPod. Looks good on TV and works on iPhone.

You still forward the ports 5010,5012 (in your router's settings) to your COMPUTER's IP address, not to your router's IP. lt now should work in iPhone's safari using the whatsmyIP adress, as long as Remote is properly configurated.

This is all I have to fill in with my router (Linksys)
http://homepage.mac.com/jacdem/.Pictures/Other/NAT.jpg
Linksys (that I use with Earthlink and Comcast) has helped me in the past figure out stuff that my service provider couldn't help me with (even though they always mention that they only do Windoze and don't support Macs when I call - makes you wonder why they always have Macs on their Comcast commercials - however they always try to help), so Netgear might be able to help you configure your router/port forwarding.

I can access iPhone Remote using my direct, internal IP on my iPhone or other CPU's on the network, but I cannot connect from outside the network, or from my dyndns URL. My machines are all wifi, the enet is hooked up to an 80211.n Airport Extreme (gigabit rev) and I have a UFO 802.11g Airport extreme as a repeater. My modem by default has these ports open, verified by speaking with tech support, so I am not sure what the deal is at this point.

I'm afraid I haven't been able to configure Airport. I have a Comcast Linksys router and an Airport Extreme station connected to it. All the laptops in the house and a couple of computers work off Airport. My MacPro, which is my main computer, itself connected to several external drives, was the one I was interested in accessing remotely. It was originally working off Airport too and I couldn't access it outside the home network with Remote. What I ended up doing is that I turned off Airport in the MacPro and hard wired it with an ethernet cable to the router (which has 4 ports anyway). And bingo! I'm able to access it remotely now, either through the direct approach (using WHATSMYIP directly in my iPhone), or through 2 different dyndns services - hey, I really worked on this.
So, my advice is: if you have anyway to connect your main computer directly to your router and bypass Airport, you should be able to connect.

If you have wireless, what makes it so much more complicated? And what are the additional steps that need to be taken in order for this to work outside a home network? I guess I am a little confused.

If you read the 2 posts before yours, you can see that neither djsandoz or I have been able to make it work outside the network when an airport station is involved. I'm pretty sure it's possible, but I haven't been able to configure Airport. However, if I bypass airport and hard-wire my main computer directly into my modems (whether Comcast or Earthlink) through an ethernet cable, I can ALWAYS connect with dyndns. I spent 10 days at Disney World last month and I could always connect to my main home computer. I searched the iPhone Remote boards but couldn't find any help on how to do it. There is absolutely no support from the makers of the application (which is still not final). If somebody figures it out, PLEASE ANNOUNCE IT LOUD AND CLEAR.

Well, I tried again and I couldn't make it work. I couldn't experiment very long, though. As soon as the airport station restarted, 10 voices everywhere in the house screamed "I lost my Internet!", so I went back to my Ethernet cable and am happy for now that it's working that way.
