I posted my old iphones on craigslist and after I weeded out all the bad emails I have 1 possible buyer for my 3g. He is about an hour away and would like me to meet him about halfway. I told him I would only go 20 minutes because beyond that I would have to get on the turnpike and I dont think I should have to pay gas and tolls just to sell my phone. Anyways he requested pics today which I am fine with providing, but he also wants the serial number. I dont feel comfortable giving that to him without knowing his actually purchasing the phone. I told him I wouldnt send it via email. Did I make the right choice by telling him no? What would one need with it before purchasing the phone?

I think you made the right choice. You need to control the sale, not the buyer. If he doesn't like it, sell your 3G on eBay.

i'm done with craigslist. nothing but either spammers, scammers, or people wanting to haggle you way down on price. I'll gladly pay the fees to ebay/paypal and not deal with the BS.
Like Nappy said, I think you made the right choice. I wouldn't give out the serial number either.

i was hoping to local just to save on time and such, but i think ebay is the best bet for me. i priced low and i really didnt get much response. i just found it very strange that he would ask that question. i could see why if he wanted to know if it was a referb or not, but to request the full serial number makes me nervous. im thinking im just going to tell the guy i sold it elsewhere and sell it on ebay. the whole situation is slowly making me nervous.

After dealing with all the scammers on Craigslist, I went the eBay route and pocketed a nice $460 for my jailbroken/unlocked 3G.

He may have just been trying to see if it was a real iPhone and not a replica. I am selling mine on eBay and I have been seeing on there that they are going for about $380 unlocked. Not quite $480 but it will still pay for your new phone.
