update my baseband to the latest one using iTunes then jailbreak and unlock using blackra1n (or blacksn0w, w.e)? And I have a lot of applications, some of them were already on the phone by the previous owner and I don't want to lose them, so is there a way to copy the IPAs by SSHing into the phone or some sort so I wouldn't lose them and then install them later on?
Thank you very much.

im not sure about what you should do about the apps, but i think you should update, jailbreak and then unlock via blackra1n and blacksn0w. a lot more apps are becoming only 3.1 which may present you with issues later on.

I'm already 3.1.2 but old baseband. I'm updating using iTunes now, waiting on the new firmware to finish downloading then I'll use this (http://iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=5885) to unlock.
This is a list of my applications:
WinterBoard
Air Sharing Pro
Finger Print
Funky Punch
Number Key
Photogene
Piainst
Rock
Shazam
VoiceKeyboard
Zippo Lighter
WirstPop
Dictionary
Fifa 10
Band
Barista
Camera HD
Flick Fishing
Rolando
Red Laser
FileMagnet
Remote
Backbreaker
Crash Kart
Stick-Fu
Cro-Mag
Installous
Paper Toss
Ping!
Rooms
Backgrounder
Hot Banana
Lunar Ball
Rat On Run
Sponge Bob
Sex Jokes
IQ?
Battery Magic
R Racing GTI
Agile Messenger
AirCam
BetterPix
Facebook
CharMap
Skee-Ball
2009 Tennis
3PtHoops
NFL 2010
Wifi Track
EDIT: I just tried updating through iTunes and it said I have the latest firmware. But I only want to update so I can get the newer baseband, plus I'm feeling my iPhone is getting a bit slower than it was when I first updated so.. what should I do?

thats the same unlock i used. it worked without a hitch. do you have a different carriers simcard to test it out? or do you require unlock to use your phone in general?

Nope. I don't know what's up with that. I never get replies but sometimes, in all of a sudden, I receive ALL of them at once and then they stop coming. Weird.

If you mind, that would be great, thanks. I used to have the "Connecting. Please Wait" message all the time and it never went away, but then some one here linked me to a fix (forgot who, sorry) and I was able to use it but only send and not receive. Then sometimes, in all of a sudden, I receive all the replies at once but that's like once every two weeks or something. This is weird.

Oh my God... come on!!! Now it say:
"No Sim Card installed.. Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate the iPhone".. now where am I going to get an AT&T sim card?????

Turn the phone off. Put the sim card in and restart. You may have to also reset network settings and then it will come up

I turned the phone off then on but it's still at the same screen. I think my Dad still has an AT&T card from last November when we were in new york.. he bought it to use it there but not with an iPhone, just a separate line. Do you think it'd work for activation?

It should. What version of the iPhone do you have?
Have you put your original sim card back in?
TarekElsakka

This iPhone is locked to AT&T.. but I don't have an AT&T sim card. I only have a MobinilEgy one, which isn't valid for activation, of course. So now I am stuck with a dead iPhone. I am really pissed off now since I don't have any alternatives to use until I get this sorted out >_>.

Tarek... i dont trust geohot, or any of the rain methods.
Use Pwnagetool like how i did. It creates a custom ipsw without updating the baseband. Thatway you'll still be on 3.0 firmware but running 3.1.2 functions.
Pwnagetool has never failed me, im still unlocked.

Blackra1n Rc3 hactivates. Tarek didn't need an AT&T SIM. It worked just fine on my 3G yesterday. After I restored it with my T-Mobile SIM in it, I had the iTunes invalid SIM and slide for emergency iPhone screen. I ran blackra1n rc3 and blacksn0w and it activated and unlocked.

That's what I've been doing but I decided to upgrade the baseband as well. I actually didn't check if it did get upgraded or not. But I think it did!

After updating (or restoring) the iPhone, it restarted and gave me a screen that "Insert a valid sim", so I just ran Blackra1n and clicked "make it rain" and it did the job. When it rains, it will show the same screen of the invalid sim activation thing, just wait a minute or two (DON'T TOUCH THE PHONE) and it will go away and you'll be good to go. So it's just as Europa said (sorry just read your post now, Europa, was still on 2nd page when I replied).
