Sending my 3GS in for repair and set it up today and got this email to confirm it and on the bottom it said

WARNING: Apple has discovered that some of the unauthorized unlocking programs available on the Internet may cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software. As part of the service process, Apple will update the software on your iPhone to the latest version. IF YOU HAVE MODIFIED YOUR IPHONE'S SOFTWARE, YOUR IPHONE MAY BECOME PERMANENTLY INOPERABLE WHEN APPLE UPDATES THE SOFTWARE. Making unauthorized modifications to the software on your iPhone violates the iPhone software license agreement, and the inability to use your iPhone due to unauthorized software modifications is not covered under your iPhone's warranty.

Yeah I was able to I think it is just a standard thing they put on all of the emails now.

I just got my 3GS back today and it has 3.0.1 on so I guess they arent doing this automatically.

This notice used to be posted two years ago at the Apple store when Jailbreaking first began. It's nothing to worry about.

You had to send a 3GS off to be repaired? Normally with a problem I just book a genius appointment and if they cant fix it they replace it.

Happened twice with my 3GS and about 5 times with my 3G

They should have one in Newcastle and Grey Street would be the perfect location.

Grey Street in Newcastle is one of my favorite streets in Newcastle. I love walking down it in winter. Architecture amazes me!

you know, when you hit UPDATE, and your phone is jailbroken, it will erased all of the jailbroken modifications, rigth ?

wrong, when i was on 3.0, i was jailbroken, when i got back to the US, i upgraded to 3.1., and guess what, the battery percentage # was still next to the battery, even though i updated, and my carrier name, which i put to REGGAE, was still set,

and when 3.1.2 came out, i updated, and the battery percentage and the carrier name were still the same, i liked it very much, but it didnt completly erased modifications due to jailbreaking...

Certain aspects of JB'ing will remain, as formatting / updating doesnt format the user part of the drive.

Its always recommended to restore as a new device when taking to an Apple Store.

If you used itunes to restore or sync your old contacts, photos, apps, etc. then part of the jailbreak comes back. If you restore as a new phone, it comes back as a new phone.

Part of the phone info is stored in the itunes files and that is what puts them back on the phone. If you restored as a new phone on a computer wiped clean of itunes backup files, the old info would not be there.

Can programs hurt iPhone?

Certain programs can potentially hurt/damage your phone. Mostly, it's down to operator error. Some software that you may download could possibly have corruption. You need to be careful with what you download, if you think it may be suspicious then treat it that way.

Guys

I'm just about to upgrade from 3.01 to 3.1.2 with Blackrain/snow on a JB 3GS (AT&T locked/unlocked running Vodafone). As the first step I need to upgrade to 3.1.2 via iTunes (which I think will also do a backup - correct?), then run the rain/snow to JB and unlock. After that do I do a restore (from the backup before going to 3.1.2) from iTunes? What do you mean by "restore as a new phone"?

Thanks

When you hit the restore button, it will restore as a new phone.

When you access itunes after you restore as new, it asks you if you want to restore the previous backup.

Yes, a backup takes place right before the restore function starts.

You do not have to restore the backup if you don't want to.

The backup restoration may contain bits of the previous jailbreak.

This isn't such bad news as long as you repair your phone ASAP to avoid any updates or baseband lock outs.

Nice. I have to send it away to get a refurb but don't have the cash for a little while. Hope there's no updates...
