Blackra1n should be just the ticket:
http://blackra1n.com/
No tutorial needed. Download it, run blackra1n.exe.
Most / many people have no issues and they're done and dusted in under a minute. Some have hit issues and there are many good threads in this forum with lots of troubleshooting help and solutions.

Yes, everything is the same except now you can install apps that are not approved by Apple. The new apps are in app stores named Cydia, Rock and Icy. Most use Cydia.

Everything will be the same. I would suggest only using Cydia, rock and icy have been known to screw up the phone leading to a restore. During jailbreak, you can still sync your phone to itunes and everything. Make sure before you hit "make it ra1n" you have unchecked the box that says automatically sync when this iPhone is connected and itunes is closed.

How about less than a minute! It is the easiest jailbreak ever. Just download it from blackra1n.com, run it and make it rain.

Hey guys, ok I got my 3g j/b'd with blackra1n. process was smooth and quick and seemed to work just fine. I spent a while downloading themes and stuff with Rock and using Winterboard to load them. Last theme I downloaded was LockMail when Winterboard respringed the phone froze up for about 2 minutes with the apple logo. When it finally came up i have a sad face logo with a bunch of zero's and a little wording at the bottom saying "sad iphone" by Geoff Stearns. I unlock the lockscreen and get this message:
"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Springboard has just crashed.
MobileSubstrate /did not/ cause this problem: it has protected you from it.
Your device is now running in safe mode. All extensions that support this safety system are disabled.
Reboot (or restart Springboard) to return to the normal mode. To return to this dialog touch the status bar."
Then bellow this I get 3 buttons that say "OK-Restart-Help" Ok just makes the message go away. Restart seems to restart the Springboard, but its not taking me out of safe mode :(
Is there anyway to fix this, or should I just restore and start over? Thanks for the help and sorry for such a long post, just wanted to make sure you had all the info.

You may have to restore as lockmail or something may not be playing nice but I would first try a hard reset by pressing and holding both the power button and the home button and not letting them go until after the phone shuts off and the apple appears.

Most people that jailbreak experience SB crashes to safe mode at least occasionally. Those that use Winterboard usually have more. However, I haven't had any with blackra1n and I do use Winterboard. Incompatible themes and apps will cause them. If you experience a SB crash right after installing an something in Cydia, immediately uninstall it. Sometimes the incompatible theme or app will throw the phone into a infinite reboot cycle or lead it to getting stuck at the boot logo. In that case, you have to restore.

Heh, funny thing is, i've NEVER had a crash to safe mode, and i've always used winterboard. Now on Blackra1n I got one. Anyways, I tried all the different ways to reboot, hardboot, softboot, respring and all that stuff so I finally just restored it. Got a bit of a scare there, b/c the restore was unsucessful the first 3 times. Then I noticed I needed to update itunes. so I did so and it worked. Not sure if i'm gonna j/b after that ordeal, went all night and this morning thinking i had a brick in my hands :(

On another note, I can backup while I'm jailbreaked right? And If i download a theme for the springboard, and a couple of the app/buttons dont have themed looks to them, is there a way to go in and alter them so they look the all the other theme buttons? I guess is there a way for me to edit the theme myself?

openssh and cyberduck (if you have mac) will allow you to alter the icons

Yes, it's just fine to let iTunes do backups while jailbroken.
WinSCP is the Windows alternative to Cyberduck for SSH. You can also just use iPhoneBrowser. Update iTunes to the latest version before doing anything. Once you install iPhoneBrowser, go into Cydia and install afctoadd. You'll then be able to access the file system through iPhoneBrowser. Go to Library > Themes > Your Theme > Icons > and change Text.png to Messages.png and add in icons you downloaded.
If you want to set up SSH, here's the directions. http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=3221 The advantage to it, is that it's wireless.
