Hi guys,

I just joined the forums, so go easy on me. If there's another thread out there that answers these questions, feel free to direct me to it.

I have an iPhone 3GS currently running firmware 3.1 (7C144) -- not sure if this is the same as firmware 3.1.2.

I previously tried to jailbreak my phone about 2 months ago when the 3.1.2 upgrade first came out. I did it without upgrading to the 3.1.2 firmware, but the problem is, my iphone froze in the "make it rain" process, and then I had to restore using iTunes. This, of course, got me stuck with the latest firmware.

I'm looking to jailbreak my phone (not unlock it, since I'm fine using AT&T), but up until recently, I had heard this was impossible to do on the latest firmware.

Here were some questions I have:

1) Is firmware 3.1 (7C144) the same as 3.1.2?
2) Can this firmware version be jailbroken on an iphone 3GS using Windows?
3) If not, can it be jailbroken using a MAC (even if my phone has been synched to a Windows system previously)? What implications would this have that I should know about?
4) Does it matter what version of iTunes I use to do this?
5) For someone in my "situation", what thread on these forums have people found give the best step-by-step on how to jailbreak?

Thanks so much in advance! Again, if these questions are complete duplicates, then please let me know. I didn't find anything that explicitly answered these questions though.

Just realized there's a whole forum dedicated to iPhone modifications, so I assume this will get moved there. I'll start perusing some of those threads, but if anyone has answers to these questions, still feel free to post.

1 - no, 3.1.2 is different
2 - I would go to 3.1.2, and jailbreak that.
3 - On the mac, use the pwnage tool at http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ - if you're a PC guy, use blackra1n - although it will prevent you from unlocking it, so if you might ever need to unlock it, use the pwnage tool and don't upgrade through itunes.
4 - not that I know of.
5 - Check out the iphone modifications forum.

Not sure how to officially "thank you" on the board, but unofficially, thanks for your reply.

Regarding your response to #3, unlocking is only needed if you wanted to use the iPhone on a different carrier, right? I guess I'm willing to forego that since I'n signed up with AT&T for the next 2 years anyway. I guess at that point, if I ever wanted to unlock the iPhone, I could probably just buy another one and start from there (unless people are expecting that iPhones 2 years down the line already won't allow you to unlock them).

Hey, no problem!

Yeah I wouldn't sweat the unlocking thing, since you'll probably be with AT&T forever
