I have gotten iPhone a week ago. I thinik I have succeeded to have the phone JailBroken by using Blackra1n and Cydia is installed. Blackra1n is not yet uninstalled. The OS is 3.1.2(7D11) and the modem firmware is 05.11.07. I have account with ATT Mobile. I am a Windows user.
Now how can I add Internet tethering capability to use the phone as a modem?

Lots of info - read the whole thread and then give it a try.

Thank you very much for your reply.
I followed the instructions but in the step 6 a new item entry is supposed to show up for setting up Tethering but there was no new item added under the Network. I wonder what course of action I should take from here.
Your further suggestion is appreciated.

Did you reboot phone?

You will have to post everything you did for us to help at this point. Or, delete everything you have installed, start over and make sure you do everything correctly.

I followed a combination of these tutorials

http://appleguru.org/iPhoneTethering.html

and

That's the patch you installed from cydia.

1)Open up Cydia and go to the Repositories section. Scroll down to the iPhone-Notes.de source and install it.

2)Go to the "Tweaks 3.1.2" section. Install the appropriate tethering hack for your iPhone model (There is a 3G version and a 3G[S] version).

3) Reboot
4) Download the 6.0 IPCC file.
5) Open command prompt on PC and type “C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe” /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 (with the ")
6) Open itunes with phone plugged in and hold shift and click check for update...it will pop up a screen change it to "iphone carrier config .ipcc" and select the file downloaded in step 4.
7) Install the BenM Mobile Config for AT&T via Mobile Safari at help.BenM.at
8) Respring
9) Remove the BenM profile for AT&T
10) Respring

I did exactly what the following link said:
http://appleguru.org/iPhoneTethering.html
1) Installed iPhone-Notes.de source
2) Under "Tweak 3.1.2" section I picked Tethering 3GS-3.1.2 and installed
3) Rebooted
4) Navigated to the above tutorial on the iPhone and clicked on the first "here" to download "ATT_Tether.mobileconfig" and installed it on the iPhone. Note that ATT is my carrier and I have a iPhone data plan.
5) Went to Settings -> Network but found no "Tethering" listed there. This is where I am now.

Your instructions appears different from half way to the end but I wonder if what I did as above cover your step of 1) to 7). What exactly do I do to "Respring"? Before I follow your instructions I wanted to post everything I did as you suggested. Please reply if I should start over. If I need to delete any software installed please provide how to.

It didn't show for me either.

I uninstalled the profile installed in step 5, then ran step 5 again, this time choosing to install the second mobileconfig file instead of the first.

After that tethering showed up, and indeed works. Visual Voicemail works fine too.

Based on the instructions it would seem I should have been able to use the first mobileconfig but again that one did not work for me. And the first mobileconfig file didn't seem to have anything filled in under advanced settings--and no way to edit it. The second mobileconfig file showed up with wap.cingular.

Wait until noon today. Blackra1n RC3 is supposed to support tethering. Not sure yet, but it may be included in Geohots latest release.

Check out the Blacksnow thread for more info.

Does that mean you used the mobileconfig for non-ATT data plan user even though you are ATT data plan user?

When you did as described did you first uninstall the previously installed mobleconfig? If so how can I do it?

Does this mean I need to re-JailBreak by using the Blackra1n RC3?

What is IPCC which is in your earlier post?

I believe the instructions are wrong, in claiming it is for non-ATT data plan users. Based on what I saw the second mobileconfig is actually the correct one. The one made by wickedz, which is the second one, is the exact same APN as linked to in this article:

http://appadvice.com/appnn/2009/10/31-tethering-visual-voicemail-fixing-the-benm-mobileconfig-file/

Notice in the above article it mentions nothing about it being for people "on a non-iPhone data plan."

Regardless, the first mobileconfig file didn't work for me at all.

The one from w1ckedz did; and that is with visual voicemail working too.

Go to Settings-->General-->Profile. Just tap remove and it will get rid of it. Install the second mobileconfig link and you should be fine. Or install it from the link I posted above. That article was written by Nic Elder who IS w1kedZ.

I noticed that there are two profiles being "US ATT unsigned" and "US ATT Tethering unsigned". I removed the second one but am not sure if the first one should also be removed. Please let me know what to do about it.

Remove all profiles then add the one I said worked.

Tinman and RPMSTL:
The second profile per Tinman's post solved the problem. I noticed that the Blackra1n RC3 was out but I tried Tinman's suggestion since it is simpler to do.
Thank you so very much for your help.

Has anyone tried this method yet? Did it disable VVM?
http://limitededitioniphone.com/its-over-tethering-on-iphone-os-3-1-2-is-now-possible-activate-tethering-on-all-iphone-devices-enable-native-mms-on-iphone-2g/

Will this method work if you update rc1 and then install blacksn0w or do you have to use rc3?

No luck with BlackSn0w and tethering for me. Never got Wifi, tethering and VVM going at the same time.

The mobile config file in this tutorial works great.
