Another confused noob

I have an unlocked/jailbroke 3G on version 2.2 (5G77). I am a windows vista user. I get confused on all the firmware combo's.

I would like to upgrade my firmware to 3.0.1 as many apps now require 3.0 or better.

I had to deauthorize and then reauthorize my computer and in the process several of my apps got updated and no longer work! Specifically docstogo now requires 3.o and Shazam got "updated" to require 3.0.

Also is there a way to save the apps that were previously installed via cydia or installer?

Anyone care to walk me thru this?

And even more App Store apps are requiring 3.1, and that is really the only reason to go to 3.1.2, otherwise I would have stayed at 3.0.1.
There is a Cydia app called FWChanger that can be used to "fake" your firmware version so you can download App Store apps without upgrading.
You'll want to wait for the blacksn0w unlock that comes out on 11/4.
I have successfully used PkgBackup to backup and restore my 35+ apps from Cydia.

I agree with rojo. Here's what I would do:

- Use PkgBackup to backup all your Cydia applications for easy re-install

- Wait until Wednesday (11/4) when geohot releases blacksn0w which will be bundled (apparently) in blackra1n: http://blackra1n.com (don't download it yet)

- Update your iPhone to 3.1.2 via iTunes and use blackra1n to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone on the 3.1.2 firmware and 05.11.07 baseband

And - if you care about your contacts and/or calendar entries, sync them with Outlook or back up to Google, MobileMe, or whatever system/app you have that is off your phone.
They should be OK, but you never know. I have not lost mine yet going from 2.2, 3.0.1, and 3.1.2, yet others have.

Thanks for the reminder. You have no idea how many times forgetting the small stuff has caused me many hours of aggrevation...lol
