More information is needed. You have installed iTunes on your computer correct and have updated to the latest version? Is your iPhone jail broken? What OS are you running on your Dell? Have you tried rebooting your iPhone? You'll get help here from someone. Also welcome to EIC. :dft003:coolkid

Make sure firewall isn't blocking the iPhone. That can happen on your first connection. Have to give the permission for it to connect especially if you are on a network. Have you tried rebooting the computer? You forgot to mention your OS ...xp...win7....vista?. reboot phone and reboot pc. Try again.

Sounds like the iPhone being "seen" as an external USB device versus iTunes starting and seeing the iPhone upon connection. Is that right? Can you click on the icon in the task bar? What happens? By the way, have you connected other USB devices and when confronted with the "what to do" dialog, did you, by chance, tell it to NOT use iTunes, for example.
When I was using my XP Pro laptop to manage my Q9h, I had to downgrade my Zone Alarm interenet setting to moderate versus restricted for ActiveSync to be able to access and to manage the phone.
YMMV

That's your problem. For some reason the Apple Mobile Device driver is not installed correctly. Try going to Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - and find Apple Mobile Device in the list. Click change and then repair. I would reboot after this and then see if it works.
