View Full Version : Is there a way to tell before buying a 3GS?

I got a 16GB 3GS cuz I was cheap and didn't want to spend the extra 100.00 for 16 more GBs...but now loading my iPod up I'm kinda wishing I got the 32GB. I bought it at Best Buy and going to see if I can exchange for the 32GB or not. If I can, the only thing I'm afraid of is that it will have the bios thingy where you can't jailbreak it.

Any way to tell if the phone has the new unjailbreakable bios in it before buying?

If you just restore the phone there will be no way possible that they can tell it was jailbroken.

The OP was asking if there was any way he could tell if the new iPhone has the new bootrom on it that supposedly can't be jailbroken yet.

Cjvdh (http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/members/cjvdh.html), napoleon is right...I'm wondering if there's anyway to tell if a new in package iPhone is the new or old bios. My luck Best Buy will tell me "sure, come and exchange"...ill get the 32Gigger only to get home and find out I can't JB it yet.

Pretty sure you can jailbreak all of the new firmware out right now using blackrain. Someone can correct me if I am wrong.

Rumor has it that Apple has made changes to newly released models that prevent them from being jailbroken. This is what the OP is refering to. I'm not sure what bootrom version number is supposed to be un-jailbreakable and you can't check it until it's out of the box.

If someone wants to tell me what info to look for (assuming I can do it myself), I just got my replacement iPhone today, in case anyone wants to compare it to their launch 3GS...

you can check by going into DFU mode and seeing which version you have

This is the new one that can't be JB'd...well it could but only certain ways it will work

Doesn't blackra1n RC2 allow you to jailbreak these new ones?

This is what I was thinking I was not aware that there were any iphone's out there that could not be jailbroken.

No, I'm saying if the new 32GB'ers are unjailbreakable, I'm not exchanging my JB'd 16GB for it.

I am quite sure than unless the new bootloader came out in the past 2 weeks, that the phone can be jailbroken. That doesn't mean unlocked. Still waiting for that, although Geohot seems to have something ready for the 4th.

Here's one more thing to consider: No matter what phone you have or buy, eventually, it will be jailbroken. Unlock, might be a different story, but I am quite sure that jailbreaking will ALWAYS be around.

And remember kids, if you paid anything for your jailbreak or unlock software (developed by either the dev team or GeoHot), you paid too much. They are FREE

The new bootrom can be jailbroken, but it is a tethered jailbreak. Meaning, if your phone is turned off by you or from a dead battery you will not be able to turn it back on until you connect it to a computer and re-jailbrake.

I wonder if the people at the Apple store/Best Buy would let you put it in DFU mode? Once it in DFU mode there is no way to get it out unless you have itunes correct?

You don't need iTunes to get it out of DFU mode.

Hold the home and power buttons down until you see the Apple boot logo.
