I think you might find this article, Creating and Using Custom Ringtones (http://www.everythingicafe.com/blog/creating-and-using-custom-ringtones/2009/10/27/), part of our Learning iPhone (http://www.everythingicafe.com/blog/category/learning-iphone/) series by Marianne (aka macgirl in the forums).

I think a combination of how she does it for free with how I do it is best. Instead of editing the song length in iTunes I use a free program called audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/). I've always found it easy to use and when I edit the song length I think it is easier to get exactly what you want. Then you just create a .wav version, drag it into iTunes and create a .aac version and finish following her instructions.

save yourself the hassle, just go to audiko.net. not only does it have any song you can think of but you can upload your own sown to the site and edit it from there. doesnt have a 30 sec limit like itunes either. enjoy that

this ain't gonna help but I use Adobe Audition to edit my ringtones. Most of the times I'll clip parts and mix them together to make them sound like a complete ringtone. Why? I have no idea since you usually pick up with in 10 seconds anyway..lol. I'm a nerd and sometimes will just listen to the clips on the phone.
I had a TON of ringtones up on Myxer.com but they suspended my account after 4 months for having nothign but "copyright" songs :(

iRinger - I've been using it for a couple of years now, works pretty well and very easy to use.
