View Full Version : Why does the phone suck so much?

I've had a 3G iphone on Americas worst network (AT&T) since launch. For the first year it worked...okay. It crashed while doing the simplest things like a phone call or playing music. Though I tried to forgive those issues. Oh and let's not forget the battery.
Though then Apple or AT&T just do the most annoying things to their customers that pay so much money. Like blocking apps like Google Voice though they let in Apps like "Shake and kill the baby". All that stuff as pissed me off though then just this day I've had two phone calls be dropped, (which ya is probably AT&Ts fault for that one) got kicked out of safari. I reboot my phone for like the fourth time this week. And now it cannot connect to the app store or safari though it can make calls and txt. And yes I've done a clean restore and all that stuff. Help would be nice though I'm more interested in why they can't just make the phone work after what 3 years?

Oh and yes I just made this account to make this thread. though I'll probably use it later if I can somehow fix my phone to play some apps then discuss said apps. Oh and for the mods how about some help or a reply before you close thread. Yeah I'm angry though I think I least provided some good reasonable questions. Oh and btw I've switched from wifi to 3g to edge and nothing has worked to get me to connect.

As with all products, a lemon does get out on occasion. I can't think of a single company that has produced 100% perfect products. Think of the millions of iPhones out there, there has to be one or bad ones in the bunch. That doesn't mean the iPhone 'sucks'. It just means your iPhone sucks. I hear Verizon has a new phone coming out next week, go for it!

Look at these fourms. Like HALF of these threads are for help with an iphone. A normal smartphone doesn't have this many issues.

Most of the real issues I've seen are jailbreak related.

You're definitely in the minority with your issues, Zepo. Plus some of the things you blame AT&T for are Apple's issues (Appstore approval policy). I would have taken my phone back to Apple for an exchange long ago if it's always been so bad. It's probably a hardware defect with your unit.

Usually only the people with problems are posting. The rest of the million Iphones are working just fine.

Sorry to hear your issues you're having. Call AT&T, you might have an outage of some sorts in your area. I've had that before where I had voice/data issues. If not, you should be eligible for an upgrade. Go for a 3G[S] or switch your carrier if you don't like the service. Plain and simple.
And for the record, the iPhone rules!

So then what I am suppose to do with this 200$ (probably 250$ for money I've spent on now alomost useless apps that crash half the time) phone that can only make phone calls and txt messaging? And nobody has really answered my questions but whatever this is a iphone website people are going to side with Apple no matter what here. Whatever I'm just tired of Apple being on the worst network of all time. And Apple and AT&T having P.O.S customer service. Any help with my problem will be nice. I cooled down by punching my boxing bag to death that has a Steve Jobs picture taped to it. soo yah

Zapo have you tried resetting your network settings or a hard reset? These many forums are here to help and have been a great help to many many people who've needed it. Do they solve all problems? No sometimes the phone is just a lemon.
You come in here pretty much demanding help like it's owed to you and the very people who may have the answer to my life easier may well keep it to them selves. If you go back and read your only 3 posts at EIC, that's just not a good way to make friends or get help!:dft012:wink

I posted my last message before I read this one for the record...Um yeah AT&T has some of the worst customer service ever. When I actually got a human on the line after half an hour, they told me to restart my phone do a restore and such then go to Apple then she hung up. Yeah great job :dft007:angry

AT&T is definitely not the worst network of all-time. It's actually a pretty good network. Your area may just suck for coverage. Where do you live?

I'd demand to know if you have an outage or issues with the network in your area. Sometimes it takes a bit for them to admit or actually look into it, but if you're persistent you'll find out.

I live in Idaho pretty crappy coverage, though I do have 3G most of the time in town. Though as soon as I leave there I get dropped to the coverage level below edge, that "o" network. Oh and what does lemon mean for an iPhone? Like instead of an Apple its a lemon?

LOL, you know, like a lemon - just a bad one of the bunch. Anyway, yeah they're definitely not the largest network in America (Verizon's coverage does have them beat). You can try taking it to Apple and see what they say, too.

Okay well my question is to all is why does this process take so long and be so frustrating? When I was with Sprint they put me on hold for a while also but at least I got a person who didn't HANG UP on me. That's just terrible.

I would unlock to get to T-Mobile though I'm under a contract with AT&T.
KabaModern
10-30-2009, 06:12 PM
You have to remember, AT&T has a lot more customers than Sprint does therefore their wait time might be a little longer. They need to filter the calls to the correct representatives, hence why their voice menus are a bit long. Just hang in there. It's all a luck of the draw with the CSR's. Sometimes you'll get an extremely helpful one and other times you won't. Your best bet is to hang up and try again, you're bound to get someone different.
KabaModern
10-30-2009, 06:12 PM
You could also try and keep hitting "0" - a lot of times it takes you right to a CSR for a lot of companies...

If a restore doesn't solve your problems, no advice given here will either. You either have a hardware issue or a serious network issue in your area.

If I were you I would move to a place with reliable cellular service. Or you could try a signal booster like the Wilson iBooster.

okay.
so my iphone will turn on, but it is stuck at the apple logo, then eventually it will go to a lighted up black screen.
I try to connect it to my computer, but my computer or itunes will not detect it.
also, i tried to put it into dfu mode, but it will not go into dfu mode.
i also checked for water damage by putting it in rice for 2 days, but it still will not turn on. can anyone help me?
i will send money to whoever gives me the correct answer.
Additional Details
it's jailbroken so i have to restore it for my warranty to be in effect again, but since my computer or itunes won't detect it, i can't restore it. so this is why i won't go to apple for help.

If you put it in rice for a couple days that means you must have dropped it in water. I heard that putting it in rice takes more like a couple of weeks than a couple of days. Only other thing that comes to mind is doing a hard reset while the phone is on and plugged into your PC with itunes open.

Whether I'm on Wifi, 3G, Edge or "o". It's not where I live thats clear that up.

Try opening iTunes, plugging in your phone and performing a hard reset on it, by holding both the home and the power buttons at the same time. See if that does anything.

I just scanned through your thread but I haven't seen you mention how long you've had your phone.
I gotta say, before I got my first cell 7 1/2 years ago, I made certain that the provider I chose had good enough coverage where I worked, where I live, and where I would most likely travel, for pleasure and for the job.
With that settled, I was able to pick ATT but Verizon a close second.
It doesn't sound like you chose a good carrier for your "neighborhood".
This 3GS is my fourth cellphone. I joined this forum months before I switched from my Moto Q9h. I researched that phone almost as long as I researched the iPhone.
I'm a geek, so I read forums all the time but I would never spend this kind of money before careful research. I can only hope your phone is "young enough" to have Apple replace it as defective. No harm intended.
Good luck guy!

He said he got the 3G when it first came out (in one of his first posts). So, I think he's out of warranty. I doubt Apple will do anything without charging... :(

Actually T-mobile kicks AT&T ass in Idaho. My wife is from there and I have to agree with the OP, AT&T coverage up there is non-existant. Most all of her friends there are either on Sprint or T-mobile since they have the best coverage. Personally I think AT&T is the worst service provider in the country. To the OP, to me it sounds like most of your problems are because of the network, might be a good move to just pay the ETF and switch.

+1 for AT&T being practically non-existent in Idaho. I have 4 lines on my account and two of them are in Pocatello, ID. As long as you're on Yellowstone/5th, you'll be okay. Otherwise you're SOL with AT&T. I have friends from high school up there that are on Verizon and they have great service everywhere. AT&T seems to work best in metropolitan areas where as in smaller areas they can be absolutely terrible. In all honesty, you'll be better off with Verizon. I doubt it will happen, but there are lots of rumors speculating that Apple and Verizon will be teaming up come summer 2010 so you might be able to get the phone you want with the network you need in due time.
You can unlock your iPhone, get a T-mobile prepaid SIM for $10 and give it a whirl around town to see if the coverage is better before you make the full switch to T-mo and pay AT&T's ETF.

That would be another indication that there is a physical problem with your phone. It sucks for you, but to say all iPhones suck as a result is a bit short-sighted.
I'm not sure what sort of reply you're looking for here, other than "you're right, all iPhones suck"... but you're probably not going to hear much of that from us because, well... ours simply don't! :ok:ok

That's pretty a pretty ridiculous statement. The statistics are in AT&T's favor. I've had more static/drops talking to people on T-Mobile than any other provider. AT&T is far from the worst provider in the country. Sorry.
