Not to piss on anyones cornflakes but it seems like threads in OT never stay on topic. It just makes it difficult to discuss things when the subject matter changes every 5 posts. Please take your ritalin, people! :-p

This thread has tons of off topic potential.
If anyone out there needs a Mother's little Helper drug (ya know, the Rolling Stones song), I recommend Provigil. It's much better than Ritalin. It's for narcolepsy and those that just can't seem to find the time to sleep due to busy schedules. It will perk you up and bring joy to your life. If you beg long enough, your physician just might give you some.
Warning: Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, twitching eyes, extreme elation, manic episodes, apathy, fake British accent, detachment of limbs from flailing about, and of course death.

Provigil is absolutely amazing. I rarely sleep but I'm also rarely tired. However, on the rare occasion when I'm feeling a bit sluggish, Provigil works wonders. I often bring a few when I travel a lot so I can go out all day and still have enough energy to do stuff at night. Highly recommended.

If you guys were completely aware of the side effects and risks of Tylenol, you probably wouldn't ever take it. All drugs have a long list of them. The ones that save lives are particularly bad. You can lose your digits from vasopressors and I've seen people pack on almost 50 lbs over a 3 day weekend from all the drugs being pumped into them. But hey, the heart is still beating.

Personally I don't think ADD is real. I think it's just called being lazy or not caring. By giving it a scientific name we're able to manufacture and sell magical pills that make people actually get their work done.

actually it's more than "just" a "scientific" term for "lazy" or "not caring". there were test where many students couldn't focus straight and had short tension spans because of the WAY the teacher taught the subject. if a teacher is just throwing out facts and not expecting any feedback from the students, that's a good indicator that many of the students have focus issues. it's one thing to not care, it's another thing to not be able to focus for a long time.

So, you basically just said that the reason kids cannot focus is because of the teachers teaching style? Then how in the world can you consider that a scientific issue (A.D.D) with the student? Different kids learn by different teaching styles. That doesn't mean they have A.D.D.

NOW that upset me...but just so you know what ADD is:
There are two major types of ADD at this time (this aspect of ADD keeps evolving): ADD with hyperactivity (the traditional type of ADD) and ADD without hyperactivity ("inattentive" type). Here are the DSM IV diagnostic criteria in a condensed form:
Inattention (must meet six of the following to a degree that is "maladaptive"):
Often fails to give close attention to details or makes mistakes in schoolwork;
difficulty sustaining attention in tasks;
seems not to listen;
fails to follow instructions or finish work;
unorganized;
difficulties with schoolwork or homework;
loses things like school assignments, books, tools, etc.;
easily distracted;
forgetful about daily activities.
ADD with Hyperactivity (must meet six of the following to a degree that is "maladaptive"):
fidgety in a squirmy sense;
doesn't stay seated;
runs or climbs excessively (or feelings of restlessness in older children);
difficulty playing quietly;
often "on the go" or acts if "driven by a motor";
often talks excessively;
blurts out answers to questions;
difficulty waiting in lines or waiting turns;
often interrupts or intrudes on others.
As I said before I stopped taking medicine at around age 10. I had to work TWICE as hard as anyone else I felt to do good in school and I did. I went to college on scholarships. I didnt have any magic pills to help me with that. Im proud of the fact I did it on my own, but some people cant do it without.

i didn't mean that that's the only reason, but that COULD be ONE of MANY. others are born with it. my point was that it's not just bad up bull crap to excuse someone from how they act. i never said that. i only said that there is such a thing as ad[h]d and many times that's the reason why they act the way that they do.

yeah. i know very well how that feels. i know i'm intelligent, but i have trouble focussing and i can't stop moving. also as everyone already is aware of i can't stop talking. if i have something on my mind i say it. but i love the way that i am and i don't take medication for many reasons. one of which is because i love the way i already am and if i start taking medication it would take away apart of me.

I mean sorry if I upset you, but I do know what ADD is and personally just don't think a leigtimate "disease" is the root of the problem. I read the list of ADD side effects and I think of someone simply 'not caring' for every one of them.
Just for the record I was diagnosed with ADD in 6th grade and have taken medication for it the past 6 years. I was diagnosed and prescribed as legitimately as anyone else, so I think I have a right to an opinion about it.
Why do I take medication for a disorder I don't believe exists? Because it really helps me focus. While I don't believe ADD is real, I definitely believe that the little beads of dextroamphetamine sulfate inside those capsules are.
Am I saying those pills are for everyone? Definitely not. Do they help more than they harm? Most often probably not the case.

some that take the pills actually get very angry. they get a personality change due to the pills.
so you think having difficulties with school work means that they don't care? hmmm... that's interesting...

That's pretty interesting you say that because for some reason I love making and holding eye contact with people. I have no problem doing it but it's interesting to watch people react to it. A lot of people don't like constantly being looked at. I don't know, I feel like I'm giving them my attention and respect!

When i have a conversation ill look around, or look at your shoulder, or something else but the eyes.
I cant describe the feeling but i can best put it as this. When i look into someones eyes in conversation i feel like they are looking right through me.
