Of course it's cheaper. It doesn't have a GPS or line-in. If anything, it's overpriced. Granted Tom Tom's is overpriced but at least it has a GPS chip to augment/enhance the one built in.

"We had a feeling that the car kit would make a bigger impact on the smaller streets, so to prove this we ran a torture test in Central London: we left the route planner on and drove around small streets randomly to test the GPS' accuracy and speed. The result? Again, the car kit proved to be quicker -- even with the slower phone -- and more accurate most of the time. Depending on the complexity of the route the iPhone 3GS' faster processor may even save a further two or three seconds when used with the car kit."
Check out the video that goes with it...I'm leaning more towards the tomtom car kit...still have not purchased a gps app though.

Even though Navigon's is a lot cheaper than TomTom's it's still almost $60 US and that's a lot to pay for a basic phone holder. I could see if it had bluetooth or even a speaker but all it comes with is a cable.
I bought this one on ebay for less than $7 US and use the cable that my phone came with.

I've used my native 3gs with a standard holder in central London with no problem. Interestingly, navigon performed much better than tomtom

We recently took a 2 week vacation in Europe and I also used both Navigon and TomTom. Navigon was outstanding. I ended up completely removing TomTom from my phone.

Ditto, Tomtom seems to loose the road your on when roads are close together or cross over each other like when you go under a bridge etc.
I really like the Navigon app

I've got the tomtom car kit on order from
http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/shop.cgi?action=enter&thispage=00000TOMTOMU01_BCA2728P.shtml&order_id=!ORDERID!
$89 seems reasonable compared to retail. It is on backorder though until Dec 1.
