Should I turn off the Auto-Brightness option if I want to save batt energy? I got the brightness on low already...but doesn't auto-brightness drain the batt depending on the light condition?

I keep mine off and it seems to be better for the battery. If you have it on and go into an area of bright light, the screen brightness will crank to a level you never would set it to normally, draining the battery very quickly. I find a low-to-moderate single setting works for me in most environments.

I keep mine off, so the iPhone have a "standard screen". It save some battery!

With out a doubt, leave it off. About the only time I turn auto on is it I want to take a pic on a bright day. It helps to compose the picture better.

I just turn it up manually then. SBsettings helps a lot there!

I'm late to the conversation, but definitely OFF! Set your brightness manually to 50% or preferably less and your battery life will be much better...

I've tested it several times and never saw any difference in battery life worth worrying about.
Sure there are times when the brightness turns up. But it makes the screen easier to see and that's one of the things I've always liked about my iPhone. And in my case at least, for every minute auto-brightness turns the lamp up it also turns it down when in low-light situations.
So mine is always on, with brightness set to 40%. Never have to adjust it and I like that.

I take advantage of the great screen brightness of the iPhone. It's one of the advantages the iPhone has over it's competitors. The difference in battery savings is miniscule when I tested it.

Exactly. I have mine turned down, but Auto brightness is a feature that I love. In my findings, it doesn't hurt the battery life noticeably.

I don't get why people say it cranks the brightness up. From my experience when in a bright area the screen brightness goes to where you set it, maybe a bit brighter. Though nothing to the point where it's "cranked." Plus, if you feel it's too bright, lock the phone then unlock it, usually sets it back down for me.
Not only that but 50% level at 1AM after sleeping for a few hours, really hurts my eyes, thankfully the auto brightness really dims it, thus I don't feel like I just got stabbed in the eye with a pen.

I leave mine turned on at all times and don't fixate on my battery life.

+1, I just keep it off and use SBSettings.
Although, I am going to give Auto Brightness a trial run, and see how it fares.

I also leave mine on for the reasons previously mentioned. It works just fine for every day use. Sometimes if there's particularly bad glare in the environment i'm in i might bump up the brightness a bit manually... but i rarely need to do that.

After almost 2 days, I've decided to turn it back off. I think I'm addicted to having absolute control, and in most cases, my settings is better than what the iPhone decides for me.

It's too bad the stock phone doesn't have a quick method (1, 2 steps) to adjust brightness in a manner similar to the way one can adjust the volume.

If you're jailbroken it does. SBSettings as mentioned above. There are several more toggles available too. Wi-Fi, location services, 3G etc.
Oh... and I leave AB on all the time.

I think the whole point of auto-brightness is so you don't have to futz with changing brightness. Mine is pretty much... <turns to studio audience>, what's that again, folks? Set-it-and-forget it!!!

Oh... and I leave AB on all the time.I'd rather not JB at this time. I was merely thinking about how the sound and brightness can be changed rather easily on a stand-alone GPS, for example, vs. the iPhone. I leave AB on all the time as well.
YMMV

Understandable. :dft012:wink
I was leery myself but the fact that you can revert back to 'unjailbroken' is why I decided to try it. So far so good but I'm staying away from certain implements, namely SSH.
Haven't talked my wife into trying it yet either.

I dont understand anyone not wanting to jailbreak their device. Is it because the word jailbreak spreads fear among people?
If you try it and dont like it, just restore it.

I like the Jailbreaking concept. And the naming is very much perfect "JAILBREAKING". If you like Apps then definitely you will be a fan of JAILBREAKING. It gives you freedom over the iPHONE.
