Yesterday, my iPhone 3Gs suddenly stopped working from my house. I have always had a full cell and 3G signal, now phone says "no service." I have spent hours on phone with both ATT and Apple trying to trouble shoot this. Signal from local tower is fine (husband's ATT Blackberry has full signal and is working fine)Today we finally resorted to a hard restore..no luck. Yet, away from my house, iphone works fine.

If you have any ideas, I'd be grateful to hear them! Thanks!

Try settings<general<reset<reset network settings.

Thanks, I did that last night..just tried it again...still not working.. phone seems to waiver between no signal to searching to full signal, but even when it shows full signal, it won't connect to internet or complete a call.

Remove your sim and try it in your husbands phone? If it works put it back in your phone. If it doesn't work in your phone then it may be a hardware problem. Are you on 3.1.2?

Yes on 3.1.2. Apple guy had me remove and replace sim today..no change. Not to sound stupid, but husband has Blackberry..I can't put iphone sim in there, can I?

Yeah, it's just a sim. It's to test if it's pulling an AT&T signal. What did the aplpe guy say when you took it in?

Taking it to Apple tomorrow..weird thing is, it works in other places, so I am worried that if it works there, Apple will say its fine.

So putting my sim in the blackberry wont affect the bb in any way?

Yeah, it's just a sim. It's to test if it's pulling an AT&T signal. What did the aplpe guy say when you took it in?I don't think she took it in I think she was saying she was on the phone with him.

Anyways once you have it narrowed down to hardware related issue I would make an appointment with apple and all depending on how close you are to an apple store have them take a look at it. Sounds like you have tried everything.

No, why would it affect the BB? It's the exact same sim right? All the sims do now it get an at&t service. You could go get a completely new sim and try that if you don't trust me and put that into you phone. They pretty much give them away for free at the AT&T store. At lease when I was there the guy gave me a few.

I didn't mean to make it seem like I don't trust you..not the case at all! Just don't know anything about sim cards.. We're going to put it into another ATT phone and see what happens. At this moment, iphone is showing full signal but cannot make or recieve a call.

Oh, I know, don't worry. I had this exact same problem when I updated to 3.1 with my 3g. Then after about a week it started working again fine.

Try one more thing. You are experiencing this on the 3G network right? Try turning the 3G network off and see if you can make a call, etc. on the Edge network. Do this by going to settings<general<network<enable 3G:Off.

OK, so that enabled me to make a call, but phone won't accept a call and still won't connect to internet. If another ATT cell phone is working fine, I can assume it isn't a signal problem, right?

You mean using your sim? Or just in general? If the other phone is using your sim and it has a full signal and is making calls then yes, it's a hardware problem probably and have Apple give you a new one. If the other phone isn't using your sim than it could still be your sim since the sim is what gives you service. What did the apple guy tell you to do?

I was saying in general that if the other ATT phone works fine (with the sim that belongs in it), and shows a full signal, then it doesn't seem like my problem could be with the local ATT signal.. After an hour of troubleshoooting today, the Apple guy I spoke to on the phone made me an appointment to take phone to Apple Store, which I am doing tomorrow. I am wondering now whether I should try a new sim first...

Thanks for advice. I will let you know what happens tomorrow.

Seems to me like it's the 3g network since you can make calls on the Edge. But try putting a new sim in to see if that works but it didn't with my phone. Just stay on the edge network until you go to the apple store. I'll try and find te link on here that I used when I had this problem a month ago.

Check out these links. Maybe they can help you further as well.

I know these are 3.0 related but the problems are exactly what you are having. Good luck.

So what happened? Did the new sim work or did they give you a new phone?

iphoneFL

sorry about that.. got tied up with work... got both a new sim and a new phone..neither one worked. Now some higher level techs at ATT are "working on the issue" They seem to think something isn't working even though all their reports say all systems are go (duh). I get very limited, sporatic service with Edge, no service if 3G is turned on. My son's GF came over a little while ago with her iPhone and it doesn't work here either. It seems to be about a 3/4 mile radius that is down. I'll keep you posted..

i'm also experiencing the no service issue, i only got this after i've jailbroken my phone. Do you think it has anything to do with Jailbreaking?

iphoneFL

I don't know anything about jailbreaking so I can't help you there.. My problem turned out to be an ATT issue which they finally recognized and resolved.

That's great! How did they resolve the issue for future preference?

What did you use to jailbreak? Jailbreak should have no effect on your phone signal. Did you unlock your phone maybe accidentally?

It got elevated to some tech engineering dept and they fixed it. I went for four days with no signal within a one mile radius of my home.

This shows that AT&T are some good people getting that fixed for you.
