It depends on the country. Macgirl purchased a factory unlocked phone from NZ. for a list of officially unlocked countries, please see this link

That's the screen I get everytime I update my factory unlocked iphones.

How the carriers do it I don't know though. I have read in Austrailia that's it's done over the air.

exactly, but here's some good news, apple might be making a contract with verizon which means best service and a great phone which equals endless amount of possibilities :ok:ok

I thought the FCC or some other entity said that all carriers need to allow some sort of mechanism for unlocking a phone.

ahhh.... no. the purpose of the iphone being locked is to keep apple close with at&t. they had a deal and they wanted to keep it inclusive, but then the hack was figured out and now we can unlock it to put it on any GSM carrier.

eh they may have good service and if they get the iphone it would be nice, but their customer service sucks.

i use to have them and my phone broke. i took it to a store to get fixed and they wanted to send it away to be fixed and not give me a loaner phone. it would take a week or so to get done and id have my phone back. i felt that would not be acceptable and the manager proceeded to tell me i was wrong and continued on about how i didnt know anything and to just leave and so i used my busted phone to call in and let them know right there what happened and they replaced my phone at another store right away, gave me a month free and gave me the option to break contract with no fees. i ended up breaking the contract and giving the phone back once i was switched over.

i swore up and down i would never go back to them, but i have a feeling i will if apple is involved because any phone issues are with them and you skip the carrier completely.

then they should work on that, but an iphone with their high coverage would probably be a great idea. my only concern though is what about the price. would it be same, worse, or less? most likely more :(

i have a feeling it would be more. someone posted an article and it said average would be $500 but without a contract i think. if its offered with a contract with a lower price i wouldnt care. now im kinda worried the price might go up on the next one and im reconsidering my upgrade in march and if i should just get the 3gs then.

that's if you want to. personally i LOVE my 3g so i probably wouldn't upgrade to a 3gs even though it is noticeably faster...

i need more space. i have mine filled to the gills with music. i wish i would have gotten the 16gb right off the bat. ive been thinking about getting a 16gb off craigslist and see how i feel when it comes time. im fine with my 3g minus the space issue...and thats what it is an ISSUE

3g has 8g and 16gb i believe. 3gs has 16gb and 32gb. im actually hoping for a 64 gb phone. i have a lot of music...i have like 42gb of it on my external that i sometimes swap music around just for change. my dad has like 1000s of cds of older music that i love so whenever he gets a new one i just rip it and add it on then i select a couple of my faves from the cd and add it to the iphone. im about over having to delete music to add more.
