My wife's jailbroken iphone 3g just started with this issue tonight... When she gets a text message, it makes a sound, but it doesn't light up or show the message preview. It shows that there is a (1) for one new message, but nothing else.

Anyone have any idea what I could do to troubleshoot this?:032:unsure

for preview-go to settings/message/show preview

same thing for alert.

for the sound-ummm... use the switch on the side of the phone...

good luck and best wishes :ok:ok

As long as all your settings are correct, a hard reset should fix it. Just hold down the home + power button until your device reboots and shows the Apple logo, then let go and wait for it to boot.

FYI - doesnt sound like this applies to you, but just incase it does...

The 1st time you get an SMS notification you will get the screen light up and the SMS tone, however, if you dont action the text and you get the subsequent reminder notification, then you only get the sound - no light.

Could it be that you just missed the 1st notification and heard the 2nd?

Thanks for the replies, everyone... I had her reboot through SBSettings, but I haven't tried a hard reset yet. I will try that and get back to you.

I tried the hard reset, but it's still doing the same thing. She recieves the text, it sounds, but no light, no preview or notification. Even when I turn off preview in my phone's settings, It still lights up and says "So and So: Text Message", so I don't know whats going on. I had her turn off winterboard, but same problem persists.

Any other ideas?

Did you install something via Cydia that might be conflicting?

That has nothing to do with SMS. Only subsequent applications listed under the ON/OFF toggle.

That's strange. I'm on 3.0 and she is 3.01. My notifications is right under my WiFi under settings, but hers isn't there, and I can't find it anywhere else.

I don't think thats the issue, though, because my notifications are set to off and my phone still lights up and previews an incoming text.

hmmm... you said she's on 3.1 . try upgrading to 3.1.2.

She says that it was working as of two days ago, and she hasn't installed anything via cydia in that time... she mostly has games, not a whole lot of cydia stuff installed... themes mostly, but she says she hasn't installed any new themes since it stopped working yesterday.

Sorry for being out of the loop, is 3.1.2 jailbroken through redsnow now, or is it a custom .ipsw update?

Notifications should only show up when you install an application that uses them, I believe. Do you have like Ping! or something installed that she does not? If so, that's why.

Anyway, if I were you, I'd do a restore to 3.1.2 and then jailbreak it with blackra1n - http://blackra1n.com - (if you don't need to unlock it). If you require a carrier unlock, use PwnageTool from the Dev Team.

I had this same problem back when i was jailbroken on 3.0.1. When blackra1n came out, I updated to 3.1.2 and jailbroke with blackra1n and i did not have any problems since doing that. my texts come in fine with notifications and everything. so updating will probably fix the problem for you!
