I've got a jailbroken 3GS running 3.0. I have the latest iTunes (running Windows) when I try to install the 3.1.2 update I get "this device isn't eligible for the requested build"

Do I need to factory reset the phone first?

I've seen people reporting problems with 3.1.2. 3.0 works fine for me should I just stick with it and wait for 3.2 or something?

What do you mean factory reset? You should just click update, download the software and install it. Maybe you have a bad download. Download the 3.1.2 software again and try again.

This means the version of 3.1.2 you have is not for the 3GS. You must have downloaded the 3G version or Touch.

Download the correct version.

Look, I load iTunes, it syncs my phone so it knows what phone I have. A pop-up window comes up about the 3.1.2 update and I select download and install. Then it gets the error after trying to install. My phone is running 3.0 (not 3.0.1) and was jailbroken with purple rain. Now if anyone here updated a jailbroken 3.0 3GS to 3.1.2 on iTunes9 I'd love to here from you.

First of all, my brother did - and it worked fine. He downloaded the latest iTunes 1st though.

Secondly, it sounds like you have a bit of an attitude, chill out - you didnt mention in your OP that you were downloading the update through iTunes. You could have downloaded a custom ISPW for all I know. Loose the chip...

Also, the "this device isn't eligible for the requested build" error occurs when trying to downgrade.
