I'm going crazy reading all these threads and web pages about jailbreaking the iPhone. I'm finding the information inconsistent or people saying no that won't work, yes it will, you have to DFU you don't have to DFU, back and forth, bla bla bla.

Can someone please just throw me a bone here and point me to some RELIABLE instructions on how to update a 3GS running 3.0 to 3.1.2 AND jailbreak it? I'm running Windows on my PC, my phone is already jailbroken and I'm on AT&T so don't need to unlock BUT I DO NEED TO STILL USE INTERNET TETHERING! Is it even possible??? Thanks much!

I had never JB a phone until last Tuesday. (http://blackra1n.com/) It took all of 5 minutes to do. This is for 3.1.2.

I'm just curious why you want to update to 3.1.2.

I'm still on 3.0.1. and see no reason to upgrade yet.

You know, that's a very good question. I held off on 3.01, and 3.1. I'm busy, 3 PC's in the household along with all the other responsibilities of family life. Technology is helpful but also can be time consuming to maintain. I just figured, 3.1.2 was probably about time to go ahead and upgrade (and I have 2 iPhones, mine and my wife's.) But I went to update to 3.1.2 tonight and got some error that my device was not eligible for the build?? Seems Apple is trying to battle all the hacking and it connects with the Apple server before it updates to see if the iPhone is 'stock' or not - is my guess. So maybe not worth the effort. The saying comes to mind, "If it ain't broke don't try to fix it."

But then there's the younger generation with more time on their hands that like to tweak and always have "the latest."

Your point/question is well taken. I can't live without Intelliscreen as it makes up for pretty much the only major design flaw in the device not having a "today screen" and not being able to beep you to remind you have a message/call you missed, among other things. But ya, if there isn't some HUGE gain in the update, then screw Apple and their constant drive to try to CONTROL everything.

Just curious - you have been here almost 2 years and are going on 5k posts,
yet you just jailbroke a couple days ago - why the sudden change after such a long period in the stock configuration? What was the turning point?

(I ask as a new iPhone owner who could not wait and jb'd my 3G after owning it for 3 days, and my 3Gs after 1 day.)

Good question with really no good answer. I just decided after having all 3 phones that I wanted to try it. I think finding out about categories,SBSettings, and backgrounder did the trick.

After thinking about it, another reason is the extended memory of the 3Gs. In the past I would read about the terrible lag of JB phones among other problems. As a result, people were going back and forth between JB and stock. I'm sure a lot of this was due to the lack of memory in those phones. The 3Gs has the power to overcome this. Makes it a pleasure to JB.

I totally agree. I would re-JB my G to clear off all the things I'd try out
to try to reduce the lag.
With the GS, no need yet...
