I've taken care of many patients with H1N1. Several of my coworkers have had it.

I work at a prison and we had an outbreak a few months ago, I think the total that came down with it was between 90 and 100 inmates, probably 10-20 staff. I *think* I may have had it a little over a month ago, as well as my family. We never got swabbed so I'm not sure, had all the symptoms though, oddly enough it was pretty much like every other flu I've had, maybe a little more involved with the lungs, but otherwise the same.

what do you do in a case like that?

In what manner?
For the prison we stopped transferring and receiving inmates until we had not had an inmate with "flu like symptoms" for two weeks (after the last one had recovered). Then it was business as usual. Our medical staff treated the symptoms and we treated for secondary infection with Z packs, I think it was. We emptied one of our confinment units and used it for overflow for the infirmary and "quarantined" our sick inmates away from the rest of the compound for a week. During our outbreak (towards the end) the CDC changed the protocol. Now once you have been without a fever for 24 hours you are not considered contagious anymore.
At home, we did not assume we had it, and I do not know if we did, we did as we would any other flu...we treated the symptoms and out doctor treated us with anit-biotics for secondary infections.

That's not odd to me at all. There a tons of flu viruses out there and when you get sick, you're not catching the same one. This is just another case where the media blows stuff out of proportion. OMG, Y2K(12) is coming!!
And don't get me started on Y2K38 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem)...

Because you don't need to be a doctor to declare something a national emergency. It's a declaration by the government to "alert citizens to alter their normal behaviors, or order government agencies to implement emergency preparedness plans."

Five of my friends got it and are all back in school and perfectly fine now - they were all sick for about a week. My brother also had it, and he's back to normal after four days of laying on the couch watching TV.

We're getting into cold and flu season now, so I imagine that other strains are starting to spread. What I'd heard, though, was that pretty much anyone who had the flu through the summer and the beginning of the fall, had h1n1. I don't know of anyone who has had it at my school this year, but my kids' high school has had a lot of cases, several of them being close friends of my daughter. My personal trainer and her family just suffered through it, took about two weeks to make its way through their family of four.
I don't usually get a flu shot, tend not to get sick much, but I'm feeling a little differently this year. Seems not worth the risk given that my son has asthma and reacts pretty severely to respiratory illnesses. What's everyone else thinking about the h1n1 vaccination?

I think in your son's case you should discuss it with your doctor/pediatrician.

He is advised to get a flu shot annually, as is the rest of our family in order to limit his chances of being exposed. Unfortunately, our pediatrician was diagnosed with leukemia and left her practice this summer, so we now have a fresh, young doctor who barely knows us; her advice on anything isn't worth much to us.
Because of the potential for h1n1 to be much more serious than a typical seasonal flu strain, it feels to me like the risk of not vaccinating is greater than the possibility of serious side effects.
Ultimately, each of us has to decide for ourselves and hope that we make the right choice. It's not much different from everything else we do as adults.

I haven't had a flu shot in years, but every time flu season comes around I seem to catch the flu pretty bad. I had it at the beginning of this year, around February, and I was miserable for a good 4 days. I lost 10 lbs though so I was happy, lol.
I'm seriously debating whether or not to get a shot this time around, as you can never be too safe with your health.
