I load music on to my iPhone with MediaMonkey. I do not keep any music in my iTunes library. Whenever I sync my phone with iTunes (firmware updates & backup), all of my music is erased from the phone.

I have iTunes setup so that I manually control syncing ("manually manage music..." is checked) and so that the "sync" box in the "music" tab is not checked.

Anyone know what the problem is?

iPhone 3GS
Firmware 3.1.2
iTunes 9.0.1.8

iTunes has its faults, but its not dumb as hell. You need to import your ringtone into iTunes and then sync. Or manually manage your music and dont sync ringtones. Nothing will be deleted then.

These dumb as hell type comments usually spill from user error.

As to the OP. If your syncing your music through another source / computer, then by deselecting "sync music" and manually managing your media, no data should be deleted.

May i ask why you use media monkey over iTunes?

well i always manage my songs manually, and when i want to sync a ringtone, it always says that all existing content will be erased, including songs, videos and music..

It's because iTunes checks to see if the phone is synced with another library. If it is, you'll get the pop-up message telling you that.

If you sync it, it will erase everything and put whatever is in your current library on your PC, so that your iPhone will be synced up with the current library.

I have this problem too, I'm not going to ditch iTunes because it isn't a "dumb" program and I haven't had many problems in the past. Anyways, I found that if you create a Genius playlist then tell the iPhone to sync it then your music will show up again, if the next time you sync it all your music is gone again simply tell iTunes not to sync that Genius playlist it seems to work for me, it's not really a fix though but it's the best I've got.
