Does the GMail using IMAP have to go through the Microsoft Exchange email setting when setting it up?

Or, can I just set it up using the GMail account setting?

I want it to act like my regualr home email. Immediate notifications etc.

Thanks!

No, you can set up an IMAP Gmail account through the Gmail pre-set on the iPhone and not through MS Exchange. That's the way I have mine set up.

Gmail isn't push (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_e-mail), though. You'll need to set your iPhone to fetch mail from this account on a pre-defined freqency or choose to download it manually.

Thanks!

I thought GMail was push now. Did I miss something?

Also, I have it set-up through my Excange email account. Can I switch it over to the GMail account easily?

Thanks for the help@!

It is push, but ONLY when you set it up through MS Exchange. If you delete it and set it up as a regular account, it won't be push anymore.

Google has instructions here (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77702) on how to set it up as a regular IMAP account on the iPhone.

I don't think you could simply switch it over to a regular account set-up on your iPhone. I think you have to delete/deactivate the MS Exchange set-up first and then set up as a new regular account. But I've never done it so I'm not 100% sure... :)

Thank you Macgirl.

So, the way i've got it set up is "the best" for push mail. It doesn't seem to push it as frequently as I would think it should. I don't believe it to be as fast as a regular account. With my BB, when I received an email, it would arrive instantly. I guess I was expecting this also. I don't think its the way i've got it set up. I was looking to change because I thought maybe the GMail account would be faster versus the ME account.

Any ideas?

I have GMail setup as an Exchange account to sync my contacts and calendars. For mail, it is setup separately as an IMAP account.

YMMV

Hmmm...

I think that's how mine is set up as well.

Mail is through IMAP and Calendar and contacts through Exchange Active Sync. Is this correct?

When I go to settings, I have a separate account for email and 1 for calendars / contacts.

Is this incorrect?

I don't get a lot of email that's time sensitive but I have the setting to fetch every 60 minutes. My calendars and contacts are in sync and I get running counts of unread messages on 2 Gmail & a Yahoo account on my home screen even if only I check it for the time. As soon as I click the mail app, the phone updates my folders. It works for me.
YMMV

I like the timely thing. Not that all my emails are of a time sensitive nature, but some are.

Is there a way to ensure they "always" arrive as soon as they are sent?

You CAN set up microsoft exchange to go directly to your gmail account. I am using it right now and have been for a while now. You would go into your mail settings and pick exchange, enter everything as you would normally for email and use as a server m.google.com. It might give you a small warning but accept it and once thats done not only are contacts and calender set up, your email is pusing right to you in real time. Give it a try :)

Also, you aren't having your phone fetching mail constantly and draining your battery.

I thought that's what I did. However, I sent myself an email (computer to gmail account) it took 12 minutes to arrive. I have my setting set for push as well as 15 minutes to fetch. Can't figure this out.

Could someone please explain:
What do I need for true push email.

The difference between the set-ups - Microsoft Exchange and regular Google Email set-up.

Best way to set up email, contacts and calendar so all are synced and continuously up to date.

Thank you very much to the brave soul to help out...

Yes, I know. I was answering Torinate's question - he already has his Gmail set up as an MS Exchange account and he was asking if this was the only way to do it.

The way you have it set up now is your best option, unless you route your Gmail, contacts, and calendar through another push/synchronization service. I don't know why you're seeing the delays you are seeing, but a quick Google search shows that this is not uncommon (http://www.intomobile.com/2009/09/23/google-sync-struggling-to-push-gmail-to-iphone.html). Google Sync is a free service and they really have no incentive to ensure this works flawlessly for you. If this kind of service is important to you, you should probably pony up for a paid service instead of expecting a free one to work perfectly 100% of the time.

Just tried again. Took 17 minutes.

I know, what can I expect from a free service... This is where the Blackberry truly shines.

I just wanted to make sure that this was "normal" with the delay and not just the way I have my settings.

It looks that way...

Thanks for everyones help!

This is where the Blackberry truly shines.

Blackberrys are reliable devices, but you do pay for BIS/BES service on a Blackberry to get push email and over-the-air synchronization, so it's not really an apples-to-apples comparison there. :dft012:wink
